SMVDU students seek NHRC intervention | ‘Faculty patronizes goons’ | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 6 : The students of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University have sought intervention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) for rescuing some of their colleagues from wrath of some faculty members. A copy of the complaint has been sent to Prime Minister, Chairperson Women Rights Commission, Sushma Sawaraj (the leader of opposition) and Omar Abdullah the Chief Minister of Jammu Kashmir. According to the complaint, a hostel Nilgiri occupied by students outside the state was raided on August 30 by a group of `unruly' students led by Ashwani Kumar pursuing B.Arch. Ashwani, according to complaint, enjoys patronage of a professor. The group entered hostel and thrashed the inmates with iron rods and hockey sticks. The harassed students who mainly pursue B Tech in Communications and Mechanical Engineering took refuge in trenches. However, to their dismay, they were booked and arrested by the police. "No FIR was lodged and they were kept in illegal confinement by Katra Police for about 10 hours. They were stripped and tortured. This whole incident was reported in newspapers. These students were then brought from Katra Police station and again kept in University Guest House in illegal confinement. Their mobile phones were snatched so that they are not able to talk with us or their parents," said a student. "In morning, these 13 students are taken in a bus to administrative block, kept there, grilled there by Dean of students. What is their fault? Vice chancellor is now trying his best to pacify Ashwani Kumar Rai and is harassing these students," added the colleagues. After this incident, students of B. Tech pursuing computer Sciences, Electronics and communications and Mechanical Engineering decided to boycott classes till justice was done. Students decided to boycott the classes on 1st Sept 2011. But they were taken aback when early in the morning at 9 30 am, two professors entered the vicinity of Girls hostel Shivalik where even mothers of girls are not allowed to enter. Both of them started shouting and used abusive language while moving from one room to another, even the girls in the washroom were not spared. |
