Serious aspersions on Kashmiri politicians | | | There does not seem anything new about the US impressions about Kashmiri politicians. It is not only the US officials who cast aspersions on the Kashmir politicians as far as their indulgence in corrupt pract ices is concerned. There are others too but the US embassy officials in New Delhi have shown courage in painting these Kashmiri policians in dark colours. In fact when in 2006 the then US Ambassador to India,David Mulford, talked of "politics in Kashmir being as filthy as the Dal Lake,he had in his mind the dubious activities of not only the mainstream politicians but also those who are in the camp of separatists.Mulford is candid when he,in his report to Washington, has said that corruption cuts across party lines, according to leaked US diplomatic cables from India released by Wikileaks. Mulford has alleged that corruption in Jammu and Kashmir is widespread and prevalent not only among mainstream politicians but separatists as well because Kashmiris take it as an article of faith that poliically connected Kashmiris take money from both India and Pakistan. In the Mulford report two aspects of the corrupt practices have been highlighted. One is that the report has cleared certain misgivings on the level of honesty among the separatists. It has clearly stated that even the separatists have been amassing wealth .Hitherto an impression had developed which usually gave a clean chit to separatists and people would gener ally blame the mainstream politicians for indulging in corrupt practices.Secondly the Mulford report has claimed that Kashmiri politicians have been receiving huge sums of money from India,Pakistan, the Saudi Arabia and other agencies. Informed sources say that for a large number of politicians, belonging to both the mainstream and the separatist camps, the 21-year long Pakistan sponsored militancy has come as a boon. These politicians have received funds from the Indian and Pakistani agencies for carrying out various activities, one related to defusing the crisis and the other aimed at inciting pople to violence. Those who are sceptical about the Mulford report need to look into the economic prosperity Kashmiri politicians and those connected with them registered during the last over two decades.Examples and instances in support of Mulford are many. One has simply to watch the proliferation of palatial residential colonies, posh shopping centres, number of big cars and the standard of living of people.Once it is done one would have no chance for disbelief in what Mulford has said.During the last over two decades normal life, including business activities, remained paralysed intermittently in the state and hence it was unexpected to see rise of new residential colonies and shopping centres in the backdrop of scenes of death and destruction enacted by militants. The only plausible reason for economic prosperity is swindling of Government money and receipt of funds from Pakistani and Indian agencies.(
