Jammu and Kashmir has seen a phenomenal growth in the number of vehicles in the state without a proportionate increase in the road length and infrastructure, a state Home Ministry document stated.Due to the rapid increase in the number of vehicles without a proportionate increase in the road length and infrastructure, traffic congestion on roads in Jammu and Srinagar has become a routine, it said.About 50,000 vehicles are being added to the vehicle population annually in the twin cities, it said.Giving further details, the document says Jammu has 574 vehicles per kilometre traffic density while vehicular population in Jammu city stood at 4,04,400 excluding vehicles belonging to security forces and tourists entering the city."The road length in Jammu city is 702.22 kms. The density of vehicles in Jammu city is 574 vehicles per kilometre", as per the document while referring to traffic congestion in the city.The state government has taken short and long term measures in this regard including installation of delineators, traffic cones and road dividers, creation of diversions and restricting movement of traffic of heavy vehicles.The government has also taken measures to re-organise the Traffic Police department by creating 1,496 posts, installing traffic signals in the capital cities and preparation of comprehensive transport mobility
