Record 6 lakh tourists visits Kashmir, 24 traders fined for cheating | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Sep 7: Peace has finally paid dividends this summer as a record number of 6 lakh tourists visited the Kashmir valley, where 24 traders and others were fined for cheating.
The draft of Tourist Trade Rules has been prepared to be presented to government, which will help to check the cheating of tourists, an official spokesman said here today.
He said subordinate Legislation Committee (SLC) of Legislative Council headed by Bashir Ahmad Magray has asked the officers of Tourism Department to update the Tourist Trade Act.
It also asked them to constitute a coordination committee of Tourism, Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation (JKTDC), Forest and its allied departments headed by Commissioner-Secretary, tourism.
The Committee was informed that a record number of over 6 lakh tourists visited the valley this year.
However, the committee was informed that adequate accommodation is required keeping in view the increasing influx of tourists in near future.
It was also informed that from April this year, 24 cheating cases were registered and Rs 98,000 realized as fine from the cheaters.
The draft of Tourist Trade Rules has been prepared, the meeting was informed.
The committee discussed in detail the working of JKTDC and Tourism Department.
The Committee called for rationalisation in distribution of funds to all Development Authorities existing in the State including Kargil Development Authority.
It also stressed on preservation of heritage places.
The Committee asked the JKTDC and Tourism department authorities to furnish detailed report about the revenue and expenditure incurred on maintenance of huts, restaurants and cafeteria's for its examination.
The Chairman expressed satisfaction over the performance of Tourism Department and JKTDC, however the Committee asked them to vacate the huts and other assets from the officers in order to generate revenue as these huts were constructed for tourists.
The Committee asked the Tourism department to furnish the lists of registered hotels, house boats, guest houses and restaurants for its examination.
It also asked them to submit details of grievances and cheating cases with the tourists from time to time registered by the tourism department and action taken report in this pursuit for its examination.
