Widow, grandson axed to death in remote Pancheri village
9/7/2011 9:50:25 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 07: A 60-year-old widow and her 9-year-old grandson were brutally murdered with axes by unknown persons at their residence in the remote Sadhota hamlet of Sunal in Pancheri, Udhampur, Tuesday night.
The matter was brought to the notice of Pancheri police station at about 6.45 am today by Sadhota sarpanch Jaipal.
Soon thereafter, additional SP, Udhampur, Rajinder Gupta and a police team led by Pancheri police station SHO, Inspector Satpal Modi rushed to the spot. A Board of Doctors was constituted to conduct post-mortem on the bodies, according to police sources.
The dead included Krishni Devi (60) and Prakash (9), son of Chuni Lal.
Since Sadhota was situated in a remote Pancheri corner and there was no road connectivity to the hamlet, it was not possible for police to bring the bodies to Udhampur district hospital.
It took police and doctors six to seven hours to reach there on foot. The doctors conducted the post-mortem on the bodies which were later consigned to flames by the villagers in the presence of police.
Sources said there were multiple cut wounds on the heads and the faces of the victims. It seemed as if they were murdered in sleep, the sources added.
Prakash’s right hand was also chopped off by the assailants who later fled the spot, leaving the victims lying in a pool of blood.
Prakash was the son of Krishni’s daughter who had died five days after giving birth to him nine years back. He was brought up by Krishni.
Gupta and Modi were camping in the village and were likely to return Thursday. Police had rounded up some suspects and their questioning was on.
Sources said the possibility of the alleged involvement of Krishni’s relatives, who stayed in her immediate neighbourhood, in the murders was not ruled out. It may be mentioned that Ashok Khajuria, a renowned businessman, and his wife Promila Khajuria were brutally murdered in the area on January 13 night in 2008.
