Exemplary initiatives undertaken to transform rural profile: Dy CM | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, SEPTEMBER 7 – Reiterating resolve of the government to equip rural and far flung areas with all required infrastructure, Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Tara Chand said that numerous development initiatives have been taken to upgrade development profile of these areas. He said work on the roadmap to develop rural areas on modern lines is apace and number of projects have been undertaken to bring these areas up on the development map. Mr. Tara Chand was addressing a mammoth public meeting at Khour, today. While congratulating newly elected sarpanchs and panchs of the area, the Deputy Chief Minister said that successful completion of Panchayat elections is a landmark step in the direction to strengthen grass root level democracy in the state. He said that empowered Panchayati Raj was the dream of late Prime Minister Mr. Rajiv Gandhi and the coalition government is fully committed for strengthening Panchayati Raj Institutions. He said coalition government headed by Chief Minister Mr. Omar Abdullah is fully committed for a stronger Panchayati Raj in the state and for that various powers have been designated to the Panchayats. These grass root democratic institutions would be responsible for development in their respective pachayats, he added. Mr. Tara Chand called upon people to avail maximum benefit from various employment generating schemes launched by the government. He said in order to check unemployment flagship schemes like NREGA and Sher-e-Kashmir employment policy have been launched and now people should derive benefit from these. SDM, Akhnoor Mrs. Sushma Chouhan and officers of block development department, social welfare department, senior engineers of PWD(R&B), Irrigation & FC and other line departments, attended the meeting. The Deputy Chief Minister said that in order to give fillip to education in the area, Degree College has been sanctioned at Khour. He said land for the same has been identified and soon the work on the building would be started, adding that with start of the college students of the area would be saved from going to Jammu for higher education. Underscoring the need for better road network, Mr. Tara Chand said roads are backbone of any area and development is directly linked with well laid network of roads. He said besides upgrading status of major roads to double lane level, various projects have been undertaken to link new areas and construct bridges on different water bodies of the area. Calling upon officers to work with zeal and dedication, the Deputy Chief Minister directed for immediate taking up of those development works which were left behind due to various reasons. He said under special package of BADP work on lanes and drains should be started on priority and under NREGA possibility of taking up restoration of water bodies and fruit tree plantation should also be explored, as the same go a long way in environment conservation.
