EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, Sept 7 (KNS): Ahead of proposed march of employees towards Lal Chowk for Secretariat ‘Gherao’ (picketing of the Secretariat complex) on Thursday, government on Wednesday warned that nobody would be allowed to take law into his own hands.
Talking to KNS Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Taj Mohi-ud-Din said, “We don’t want confrontation with employees and have already fulfilled most of their demands. Still ff they protest peacefully we have no problem. But if they would try to picket the Secretariat law will take its own course of action.”
“Employees are our arms and legs. They should cooperate with the government,” he added
Taj said that there were some genuine leaders among employee who have positive approach. “They want to settle the issue but some leaders who have negative thinking are creating hurdles,” he added.
Meanwhile, latest attempt by the government to break the deadlock ended inclusive on Wednesday when employee leaders refused to change the venue of the Thursday protest programme.
Sources told KNS that under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Madhav Lal leaders of Joint Consultative Committee had been called for third round of talks today. “However, the meeting ended without any result as both the parties remained firm to their respective positions,” they added.
The meeting, besides the Chief Secretary, was attended by Commissioner Secretary General Administration Department Syed Ahmad Khan, Secretary Home, B R Sharma and Commissioner Secretary Health and Medical Education G A Peer.
Talking to KNS Khan said that employee leaders asked for some time to decide. “We can’t say meeting ended inconclusive. They (employee leaders) wanted some time to think and said they would come back by evening. So we can’t say the meeting didn’t yield any result,” he added.
JCC leader Abdul Qayoom Wani and Khurshid Aalam warned that if government continued to “stifle the voice of employees”, they would be forced to toughen their stand.
“If government fails to fulfill our demands we will announce our next programme tomorrow only,” they told KNS.
They urged the employees to go ahead with tomorrow’s Secretariat ‘Gherao’ programme at any cost.
Meanwhile, sources told KNS government on Wednesday evening called a meeting of top police and civil administration officers where it was deliberated how to scuttle the employees’ protests on Thursday.
“Till late in the evening government was in constant touch with employee leaders to cancel their Secretariat ‘Gherao’ tomorrow,” they added.
Khurshid Aalam told KNS late in the evening that they were called by the government to cancel their programme on Thursday. “However, we will go ahead with our protest proramme,” he added.
