Gobellian Propaganda and the dissensions in the Apex Committee | Return Of K Hindus | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 7: Repeat a lie a hundred times and it becomes a truth has been the belief of all mindsets which enjoy enforcing hegemony. And, the historical truth is that repeating a lie never becomes a truth and with each repetition lie makes itself more naked. On the issue of return of internally displaced Kashmiri Hindus, the machinery of the state government is employing Gobellian technique of repeating the lies and hoping that we will take it as the gospel truth. Only recently, the state government organized meeting of the Apex Committee on the return and rehabilitation of "Kashmiri Migrants", based in Jammu. The press note issued by the government about the deliberations of the meeting claimed that all the members of the Apex Committee were unanimous about asking the government to ensure their return in the nearest future. The Government wants to project that the overwhelming majority of Kashmiri Hindus thinks that the situation in the Valley has become conducive for their return. Behind such orchestrated projections seems to be a tactical intention that the possible compromises on the future of Jammu and Kashmir by the Government of India, which the separatist constituency in the Valley hopes are in the offing in the near future, can be made palatable by making the returnee Kashmiris to endorse them. The various echelons in the government and the political establishment are sure that the opinion of the Kashmiri Hindus in the Valley can be controlled to serve their purpose. Such a perception is not out of place because if the Chief Minister of the state cannot dare to take a position which displeases the fundamentalist establishment in the Valley, how can the Kashmiri Hindus living in Valley afford to do so. Despite the fact that leading organization of Panun Kashmir, both the groups, chose to opt out of the Apex Committee objecting to its return agenda which they thought was totally misplaced in the present situation and also despite the fact that the state government subsequently packed the committee with its chosen men from Jammu and the Kashmir Valley, the recent Apex Committee witnessed opposition from almost all such representatives who have some semblance of a representative credibility. Some of such representatives like, for example, R L Bhat of Jammu Kashmir Vichar Manch chose to abstain from the meeting. Moti Koul, President of all India Kashmiri Samaj, opposed the return move by claiming that unless there were a 'holistic the solution' to the problems of Kashmiri Hindus the return was not possible. He subsequently aired similar views in the press conference held after the meeting. His views must have surprised the government because AIKS in recent times was seen as a main instrument by the government to modulate the views of the Kashmiri Hindus in its favour. The state government was shocked when the representative from the Muthi camp Pyare Lal told the government that the displacement of Kashmiri Hindus took place because of the failure of the political system in the state to protect them and unless this system was corrected for the better the return of Kashmiri Hindus was not possible. He told the government that without taking Panun Kashmir on board, which has the credibility to influence public opinion, the government cannot push its views down the throat of the Kashmiri Hindus. Similar views were expressed by H N Jattu, President of all India Kashmiri Pandit Conference. He raised basic questions about the claim of normalcy in the Valley and opined that the situation was far from being normal. He responded to the government claim that Kashmiri Hindu employees were living in the Valley in Muslim houses and told that can they afford to perform their puja in such rented accommodations and display the pictures of their gods in their rooms. He said even if such practices were allowed even then situation is not normal and conducive for their return. He praised the state government for the employment package but asked the government to de-link it from return. He also surprised the government representatives by giving them the advice to involve Panun Kashmir in the negotiations for return of Kashmiri Hindus. To government's consternation even the Sikh members of the Apex Committee refused to go whole hog with the government's contention. Amarjeet Singh was candid as well as straightforward when he told the committee that there were negotiations going on about the solution of problem in Jammu and Kashmir and opined that let the solution come first and then it will be proper to discuss the issue of return. Almost all the representatives of the Apex Committee who have some credibility expressed their doubts in clear or couched words, barring a few who have been inducted in the Apex Committee for reasons not difficult to understand. |
