World Literacy Day Celebrated at MIER College of Education

Jammu, Sep 8: The Extension Unit of MIER College of Education commemorated World Literacy Day by organizing a two-day orientation programme for Class IV employees of the Institution.
It was an endeavour on the part of the unit to provide the Class IV employees with functional literacy.
During the programme they were given orientation regarding bank transaction as well as daily purchase & buying.
They were also taught how to write an application. Furthermore, awareness about signboards and emergency help lines was given to the semi-literate staff.
The resource persons for the programme were Shashi Koul, Rohnika Sharma, Komal Sharma and Anu Sharma, lecturers MIER College.
The chief guest during the valedictory session was Renu Gupta, director MIER group of institutions. The programme was attended by Surinder Kaur, controller examinations MIER, Annie Koul, HOD B. Ed wing and Rajendra Praveen, HOD B. Ed special education wing.
Introduction and welcome address was given by extension unit incharge, Anu Sharma. She informed the audience that International Literacy Day was celebrated in 1966 by UNESCO with the aim of highlighting the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.
Renu Gupta, in her presidential remarks said that literacy in India is the key for socio-economic progress and should be taken up in the right earnest if we have to keep pace with the global advancements.
She remarked that literacy involves a continuum of learning in enabling individuals to achieve their goals, to develop their knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in their community and wider society.
She further added that literacy means acquiring the skills of reading, writing and arithmetic and the ability to apply them to one's day-to-day life and this is a right of every human being.
The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Komal Sharma, convener co-curricular activities committee.
