Railway Station in wretched condition | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, September 8: One of the busiest addresses in Jammu city is fast turning in to a dumping ground for those who love to throw away litter at will and lack civic sense. Jammu is a transit point for the thousands of tourists, pilgrims and daily passengers who arrive to enroute their journey to holy Vaishno Devi cave, valley and other places. So, the railways, play a major role in all this, as the train is one of the main mediums which is largely used by the people to visit this place. There is an open area in front of the office of the SSP Railways near the Taxi stand and the same has been turned in to a garbage dumping ground by shopkeepers and others running their businesses in railway station premises. First timers and regular visitors who have to pass through the area while coming out of the railway station say the entire area near the Taxi stand is full of heaps of garbage and sometime it becomes difficult for the passengers to walk through the area with their huge luggage. The railway authorities, though claim that they are working on a proposal to make the Jammu railway station a model railway station and the same project has been sanctioned but on ground zero it presents a dismal picture. The pilgrims often go back with dirty images on their mind. When they enter the state from Punjab borders they start dreaming about big mountains and scenic beauty and the moment they come out of the railway station the same passengers have to negotiate their way out of the garbage dumps. The shopkeepers which are there in the railway station are to be equally blamed for spreading the litter at the will. The pilgrims say some of them lack civic sense and the railway authorities are also to be blamed for paying only lip service and not doing enough to maintain the cleanliness of the station premises.
