Pay Commission area row
Police foils employees protest rally
9/8/2011 10:54:17 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar Sept 8 (KNS): Hundreds of government employees Monday tried to march towards Civil Secretariat here demanding release of sixth pay commission arrears. However, police foiled the march detaining scores of protesting employees including JCC leaders.
Hundreds of employees had assembled near Exhibition Crossing, Pratap Park, Shaheedgunj and Magarmal Bagh here at around 11:00 am and started marching towards the Secretariat.
However, policemen deployed in strength immediately swung into action. The police used mild baton charge and color water cannons to disperse the protesting employees. Reports said several employees received minor injured in the scuffle.
Dozens of employees including the JCC leaders were taken into ‘preventive custody’ and lodged in different police stations of Srinagar.
SSP City Syed Ashiq Hussain Bukhari told KNS that 252 employees had been detained. “All of them were released later,” he said.
Bukhari said that no employee was injured in police action.
However, JCC leaders Abdul Qayoom Wani and Khurshid Aalam alleged that scores of employees were injured in police action. “Government is backtracking from its promises. When IAS officers have been paid arrears why poor employees are being denied. This government has double standards. They doubled the salaries of MLAs and MLAs while we have been left out,” they added.
They warned the government to desist from “anti-employees policies and shun the path of confrontation.”
Wani and Aalam alleged that some of the senior cabinet ministers including finance minister Abdul Rahim Rather were misleading the chief minister Omar Abdullah regarding the demands of the employees.
The employees are demanding release of sixth pay commission arrears, enhancement of retirement age by two years from 58 to 60 and regularization of adhoc and contractual employees.
