EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Sep 8: UP Chief Minister and BSP supremo Maya Wati sends her private jet from lukhnow to Mumbai to fetch her favorite brand of "Sandals" (ladies foot wear), reveals Whikileak's expose of secrete cables leaks. The BJP leader Mukhtiar Abbas Naqvi has alleged that it costs the public exchequer Rs. 10 lakh for jet to be flown from lukhnow to Mumbai and back, only to cater to the fancy of Mayawati for a particular brand of shoes.
The lavish style the Dalit leader, claiming to be Messiha of the poor, getting her fancy foot wear from Mumbai, is not unprecedented as far extravaganza to cater to the fancy of political leader is concerned.
The first Prime Minister of India Pt. Jawahar lal Nehru, who had special liking for Kashmir; non veg cousini would get "Gushtaba" from Srinagar, flown to New Delhi for him. In his book "Rupees Ten Thousand a Day", the veteran Socialist leader of Nehru's times, Ram Manhor lohia writes that Gushtaba, a fancy (If Nehru for food, is flown in Air Force plane from Srinagar to New Delhi daily. Citing many other cases of Nehru's lavish life style, lohia has claimed in his book that Rs. Ten Thousand cost to the public exchequer daily for the upkeep of Nehru and cater to his fancy for food. In those days of poor economy of the country, when cost of living was much cheaper compared to the present days, Rs Ten Thousand was a very heavy amount.
In defence of Nehru it was stated that since the Air Force plane after dropping supplies for the Army had to come empty, it brings Kashmiri non veg items for Nehru. To this lohia wrote why this facility is provided to Nehru alone and not to him (lohia) and other countrymen.
Ram Manhor lohia, a fire brand socialist leader, was at one time very close to Nehru family. It was generally stated that he was interested to marry Nehru's daughter, Indira. But after Nehru married Indira with Feroz Gandhi, another and other close family friend who had looked after and nursed Nehru's ailing wife Kamal Nehru, when Nehru was in jail, lohia became one of the bitterest critic of Nehru.
Reacting to the reports having wide currency those days that Pt. Nehru had preference for his daughter Indira Gandhi to succeed him as country's Prime Minister, lohia sarcastically wrote that on his part he would be happy, since he would see the pretty face of Priya Darshni (Indira Gandhi) daily in the morning news papers.
