Sectt employees change 'course' of agitation | Staying overnight in offices……..Will the unconventional strategy work? | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 8: In what can be seen as an unprecedented and historic move, employees of Civil Secretariat changed the 'course' of their agitation within the premises by deciding to stay overnight in their offices and doing work as normal. The sudden changed pattern of the striking employees forced some ministers and senior officers, including Chief Secretary and some Commissioners to stay back till late in the night. Elsewhere outside the secretariat, the employees in both the regions stuck to respective prorgammes of protests and demonstrations on the third day of pen down strike today. Even as in a bid to scuttle and fail the scheduled programmes of joint rallies and 'Secretariat ghaerao 'programme today in support of their demands, the government ordered imposition of prohibitory orders in the Srinagar city, but thousands of employees defied this only to face wrath of police at several points. According to sources Water cannons and mild lathicharge was once again used against the employees to disperse them. Exit and entry points leading to Civil Secretariat were sealed apparently with a motive to disable the employees' march towards the Secretariat. Despite this gala bandobast some employees managed to reach near the main gate only to be bundled in buses. Sources said hundreds of employees belonging to various organizations and affiliated with different unions jointly agitating under JCC were detained. Now this is something seen as a routine counter move of the government to disperse the protesting employees besides several other strategies which it has indulged in for months to break their unity. However, it is the renewed pattern Unions within the Secretariat adopted today that surely must have come as a fresh challenge and headache for the government, notwithstanding the fact most of the ministers and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah himself appears to be least bothered towards what employees are clamoring for. "After holding consultations we have decided to change the course of agitation……we would continue to press for our demands but instead of sticking to conventional techniques and ways of registering protest the employees would work during the night", said a leader of Non Gazetted employees union. We have asked the Chief Secretary to keep in circulation all RTI and litigation files, he said adding that the idea is not to let the common people suffer by frequent strikes. While the employees, over three thousand in number stayed in the civil secretariat, what added to the problems of Babus and Mantris was that they did not allow them to go till late in the night. Sources said upon intervention of some senior officers only Chief Minister left early as he was to attend some inaugural function in the city. Would there be any impact on any quarter in the NC led government remains to be seen. In Jammu on the other hand, on the third day of the three day long pen down strike call given by the employees under the banner of Joint Consultative Committee (JCC), workers organised Demonstration in their respective offices against the delay in release of 6th Pay Commission arrears. |
