Belatedly, separatists too condemn terrorism
9/9/2011 8:36:26 PM
It was a matter of surprise when Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who heads hardliners among the separatists, condemned terrorist strike in Delhi high Court and the one in Quetta in which more than 36 people were killed and over 100 wounded. He described these acts, whether committed in India or Pakistan or in Jammu and Kashmir,as sheer acts of terrorism. To him those responsible for killing of innocent people were enemies of humanity aiming at creating trouble and disturbing peace.Opinion similar to the one expressed by Geelani were voiced by JKLF Chief.Mohd.Yasin Malik,APHC senior leader,Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat. All these separatists seemed to have been pained by the Delhi and Quetta incidents.
Why this reaction from the separatists seems to be surprising? The reason being that during the last 20 years or so these separatists failed to express a word of sympathy with those who lost their dear ones in the terrorist strikes in Jammu and Kashmir. In certain cases these separatists supported acts of violence on the assumption that violence and killings were part of the "freedom struggle."When militants, operating in Jammu and Kashmir, found that these sparatists supported their actions, directly or indirectly, they kept their fingers on the triggers. These separatists did not react, that too angrily, when militants, operating in Jammu and Kashmir, indulged in various types of extortion, rape and abductions. For years together these separatists kept mum when Molvi Farooq,Abdul Gani Lone,Qazi Nissar, scores of doctors, academicians and bureaucrats were tortured to death.Had these sparatists started condemning these barbaric acts and mounted pressure on Pakistan to force the rebels to stop staging death and destruction drama Jammu and Kashmir would have not been ravaged and plundered by violence.
Why then the separatists have started condemning the acts of terrorists ?A number of factors seem to have been responsible for a slight change in their hearts. The first being that separatists themselves feel unsafe under the shadow of gun culture. The find there is no gurantee against terrorists aiming their guns towards people like Geelani,Bhat,Malik and others.Secondly, the separatists, who otherwise are known for their wisdom, have,by now, realised that majority of people in Jammu and Kashmir no longer support militants and their actions.Hence separatists do not want to lose peoples' support if they continue to support the militants.Thirdly, these sparatists believe that incidents like the one that took place in Delhi and earlier in Mumbai could disrupt the ongoing Indo-Pak dialogue. They want the process of dialogue to continue so that the two sides were able to resolve the Kashmir issue.Above all these separatists have come to believe that spurt in terrorist violence in Pakistan, during the last three years, could destabilise the country.Hence the Kashmiri separatists have no other alternative but to condemn terrorist violence in India,in Pakistan and in Jammu and Kashmir. One wishes this changed phenomnon to continue till war against terror achieved sccess
