71st Meeting of JU Council
Guv for close monitoring for ensuring quality higher education

Srinagar Sept 9:- 71st meeting of the University Council of Jammu University which was held under the chairmanship of Mr. N. N. Vohra, Governor, at Raj Bhavan here today, approved the proposal for setting up of a Community Radio Station in the Jammu University.
This Community Radio Station is aimed to bring out talents of the students and encouraging them to participate in the development process by spreading awareness about issues relating to health, environment, education, and other matters which relate to the welfare of the public at large. The proposed Community Radio Station is expected to provide coverage from Bari Brahmana to Bantalab and Chatha to Nagrota.
The Governor, who is Chancellor of the University, addressing the meeting, observed that educational issues require prompt attention at the highest levels as delays and defaults affect the future of our youth. Referring to the recurring complaints about the serious deficiencies in the functioning of privately run institutions he emphasized the need for all necessary measures being undertaken to strengthen the Inspection and Appraisal systems of the Universities for ensuring that quality education is provided in its affiliated colleges as well as at the varsity level. He said that this is imperative to adequately equip our youth with knowledge and skills to successfully face the growingly competitive environment in our country and abroad.
Referring to the creation of infrastructure facilities at the upcoming satellite Campuses of the University, the Governor said that the construction of students hostels, particularly for girls, need to be given priority attention. He also called for measures being taken for ensuring that all such Campuses have well qualified and experienced faculty.
Mr. Abdul Gani Malik, Minister for Higher Education, stressed the need for bringing all round improvement in the quality of teaching and research. In this context, he gave several suggestions to secure the desired objectives.
Prof. Varun Sahni, Vice Chancellor, Jammu University, in his power point presentation, gave details of the academic achievements of the University in various arenas in the past nearly a year. He also brought out the efforts being made to improve the existing infrastructure and listed the major achievements of the University in the extra-curricular arena.
The meeting discussed various agenda items in detail and took the required decisions. It also reviewed the action taken on the decisions of the earlier meetings of the University Council.
The meeting was attended by the members of the University Council, including Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. V. S. Chauhan, and Ms. Tanveer Jehan, Commissioner/Secretary, Higher Education. Besides, Mr. R. K. Goyal, Principal Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ravi Magotra, Director General Budget and Prof. Naresh Padha, Registrar, University of Jammu, were also present.
