Congress ministers from Kashmir toeing NC line...? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 9: Congress on account of being main ally of the NC led coalition government in the state cannot take individual decisions on key issues. Following coalition dharma in true spirit it has in fact been following NC decisions, seldom trying to assert leave alone, imposing its views or interests on the coalition partner. What comes as added advantage for NC is the attitude and conduct of some Congress ministers from Kashmir Valley who virtually follow and toe the NC line in almost all matters of governance. Call it politics of opportunism or 'playing safe game', these ministers have never asserted or presented themselves as ministers of Congress party on any issue that came forth during the last over two years in their alliance with NC. There have been occasions when matters and issues came to a pass when the political interests of both the alliance partners clashed resulting in some friction between the two, albeit for a brief time as silence and no resistance from Congress ministers in general came as more than convenience for a 'heady' and dominating NC. And to add to this, the Congress ministers from Kashmir Valley actually under such circumstances speak for NC and its decisions-all in the name of sensitive state. Few ministers of Congress from Jammu sometimes do show their 'presence' by showing initial reluctance but gradually that also gets diluted when the 'elders' of the party sort the differences or conflict of interests amicably. This has happened umpteen times over the last over two years and everytime it is the Congress which eventually 'surrenders.' For their sole interest and priority remains that the 'show must go on…." and for them power implies only their 'chair'. However, in order to address their constituencies back in Jammu, they make some hollow statements which too get erased swiftly within no time. There is actually no one within the entire hierarchy of this party to speak up or question the way these ministers are conducting themselves in the coalition. However, political observers point their fingers in particular towards PHE minister Taj Mohi-u-Din, who has all through been toeing the line of ruling NC, the way latter wants and desires things and decisions to be taken. A small instance of the current embroglio faced by the government - continuous strike of state employees in support of their demands. Though Congress as a party has been supportive and its leadership during the previous coalition regime with PDP had almost avowed that it would settle all demands including the current demand of enhancement of retirement age from 58-60 years, Taj is perhaps the only ministers who is up against the employees. The latter on a number of occasions have described him as arrogant and anti employees minister in Omar Abdullah's cabinet. Given the fact that inspite of being a senior Congress leader, Taj interestingly does not hold any post, not even at the district level in the Congress hierarchy. One wonders whether is actually in Congress or just a tag of the party is attached to him. |
