State’s only Astroturf decay, courtesy Sports Council

EARLY TIME REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 10: Major Dhian Chand appears to be mute spectator to the brutal and apathetic approach of the State Sports Council towards the only Astroturf of Jammu and Kashmir that is presently in shamble, decay and losing its sheen.
As the hockey wizard is also witness to the fact that no activity worth the salt has been undertaken on this international standard infrastructure for a long time.
Unfortunately, inaugurated 12 years ago in 1999 by then Chief Minister, Farooq Abdullah, the initiative of KK Hakhu, the state of the art Astroturf hockey stadium could not be completed during all the years.
Constructed with a cost of Rs 1.25 crore a decade ago, the infrastructure remained a neglected lot in the hands of unprofessional and directionless autonomous sports body of State Sports Council.
It seems that the eight-member ground staff at the K K Hakhu Stadium continue to be a silent spectator to the decaying turf. Almost 90 per cent of the total area of the turf is full of silt and has turned blank. Interestingly, the ground staff has well maintained the surroundings of the playing area by planting trees to show their presence felt.
Unfortunately, the Minister for Sports, R S Chib too could not do much in bringing back the greenery of the turf, rather he managed installation of a statue of hockey wizard, Major Dhian Chand within the stadium on Sports Day last year.
“The great hockey player of the country, Major Dhian Chand might be feeling uncomfortable and suffocated the way hockey and its infrastructure is treated in Jammu and Kashmir,” expressing his concern a senior hockey player told SAN.
He further said that the State Hockey Association is equally responsible for the plight of hockey in this part of the country. Because maintenance of infrastructure is the duty of Sports Council but holding of activities is part of Association’s job.
