PDP making major inroads in NCs traditional vote bank | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 10: Ruling National Conference seems to be loosing its traditional strong belt with each passing day. It was evident from the recent developments when scores of its old and strong workers joined hands with People's Democratic Party patron, Mufti Mohammad Syed during his recent visit of the region. National conference leader from Poonch district Shehzad Khan who was strong contender of party mandate in 2008 assembly elections and known for his long family background of NC , joined hands with Mufti Mohammad Syed on September 8 at his residence in village Chandak along with his hundreds of supporters . The reason he cited was that the party he was associated with has completely failed on all fronts and there was no hope of any repair under the leadership of Omar Abdullah. He said that he and his supporters felt that the best option in the present scenario of the state was only PDP under the leadership of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Not only Khan, Abdul Qayoom Dar, a retired superintendent of police in Rajouri district and a respected person of Kashmiri community is an other name who also joined People's Democratic Party along with his supporters saying that the only hope in the state of Jammu and Kashmir seems Mufti Mohammad Syed . Large number of other NC workers also made their exit from the party and joined People's Democratic Party in the past few days sending shivers to the spines of ruling National Conference which has always been dependent on this region to keep party graph in balance in Jammu province. In Jammu province, the known strong belt of National Conference was Chenab region comprising of three districts namely Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban and Peer Panchal region comprising Poonch and Rajouri districts. In totality, these regions had always been strong supporter of National Conference and they played always a big role in compensating damages the party suffered in other districts of Jammu province. At present, the party has only one seat out of six eats of Chenab valley region. Baring Kishtwar, all other five seats like, Doda, Bhaderwah, Inderwal, Banihal and Ramban are with Congress. Sources say, the Kishtwar seat was also left by Congress because of the Azad's relations with the candidate. And there is no hope for NC to make come back in the region in future. Similarly, the party has also suffered a huge loss in its strong belt -Poonch and Rajouri. Out of total seven seats, the NC has only three seats at present and rest of the four are equally divided between Congress and PDP. However, in this region, instead of Congress, the PDP seems to be proving more dangerous for National Conference. Local National Conference leadership is also worried with the trend and they are expecting much damage to the party in the times to come. A senior national conference leader of the region who had been at prominent chair in the past said "main reason of the damage to the party is the non performance of their leader Omar Abdullah both at party and government level. "He is under the influence of those people who don't know the history of National Conference", he said while adding that he does not see any future of the party. He is not alone having such sentiments within the party; there are many others who are waiting for proper time to get rid of the National Conference and to jump in any other party. Political observers say that if the trend continues, the biggest beneficiary in this region would be PDP. |
