Select committee may seek time for its report on land use bill | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Sep 11: :-The Select Committee of the state legislature, to which the bill related to the prohibition on conversion of agricultural land for non-agricultural purposes, is likely to submit its recommendations and report to the House during the ensuing session of the Assembly. The session of the state legislature is to begin from September 26 in Srinagar. According to the Minister for Agriculture, G.H.Mir,"if the select committee has not been able to prepare its report by the beginning of the session it has to seek permission for extension from the House." The Bill had to be referred to the select committee after not only the opposition members but some members of the ruling coalition too had opposed various clauses of the Bill. Mir said that he state needed a piece of legislation which would prohibit use of agricultural land for non-agricultural purpose. In support of his contention the Minister said that during the last several years vast chunks of agricultural land had been converted into residential colonies thereby squeezing land for raising different crops. The Minister said that since mono-cropping practices were being carried out in Jammu and Kashmir the state cannot afford to lose land for non-agricultural purposes. He requested the members of the select committee to expedite submission of the report to the House so that the vested interests were not able to use agricultural fields for non-agricultural purposes. Government sources said that increase in population had resulted in bigger demand for new residential colonies. Hence there was bigger possibility for using agricultural land for non-agricultural purposes and that too number of builders, some of them from outside the state, had started building multi-storeyed residential complexes
