Equitable development or equitable neglect? Omar must ponder | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 11: While his government cannot fill potholes on city roads, the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Sunday said his government is striving for equitable development of all regions of the state and the amelioration of general public is the most important part of the development policy. A cursory look at the city roads in many parts of Jammu and Srinagar shows their appalling condition. Pedestrians and motorists have to walk and drive cautiously not to fall into uncapped manholes , vehicles take bumps strong enough to dislodge the kidney stones of patients and we have an unmindful Chief Minister talking of equitable development for far flung areas of the State. While his presence is required in the summer capital, the Chief Minister has suddenly decided to take an entire week off to address his wanderlust. That is the state of affairs in this unfortunate state which is ruled by confusion and chaos. "Our government is determined for equitable development of all regions of the state. We have focused specifically on the holistic progress of far-flung and remote areas," Omar said addressing a public gathering in Drass this afternoon. The Chief Minister said the government was fully aware of difficulties of people living in "bad pockets and inaccessible areas". Considerable attention is being paid to address their development needs and mitigate problems, he said. What is the considerable attention being paid to the far flung areas? The Chief Minister has spoken of having sensitized his administration at all levels. The fact is that the administration has become completely insensitive at all levels. He speaks of visible results while the only results those can be visibly seen are lack of initiative, lack of accountability, a free hand to the corrupt and a coalition government engaged in squabbles between the stake holders. Omar said Panchayat elections have paved the way in the direction of making grassroots democratic institutions units of power and decision making. What powers are enjoyed by the newly elected Panches and Sarpanches? They are slapped by state government officials and ministers publicly tell them to get lost. The Chief Minister must take some time off from his entertainment and speak to the people on the ground in the absence of his ministers and officials. He would learn fruitful lessons those could stand him in good stead since he has a long political career ahead of him. Sycophants surrounding him at present will desert him a week before Omar loses favour with New Delhi. He will have to strive to create a political constituency in the state which must not look for crutches either in the north block or in the south block. But, does he have the time and the inclination? |
