Sham reviews relief measures for cloudburst affected families | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, SEPTEMBER 12 – To review the measures initiated by the civil administration to provide relief to the cloudburst affected families of various villages of Akhnoor Tehsil, the Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture, Mr Sham Lal Sharma chaired a meeting of officers of Health, PHE, Flood Control, PWD, PDD, Revenue, Rural Development and other allied departments at PWD Guest House Gandhi Nagar, here this morning. District Development Commissioner, Jammu, Sanjeev Verma, Sub Divisional Magistrate Akhnoor, Ms Shusma Chouhan and other senior officers of concerned departments also attended the meeting. While reviewing the sector wise progress on the restoration of public utilities at the cloudburst affected villages, the Minister directed the concerned officers to complete the restoration work on the damaged roads and power and water supply network on war footing to avoid prolonged inconvenience to the people. He desired that all roads in the affected border areas should be made motorable to facilitate comfortable movement of the people there. The minister asked the Block Development Officer Akhnoor to personally conduct survey to assess the damages to residential houses and other private property so that the compensation would be provided to the deserving lot under Indira Awas Yojna. The minister also directed the authorities concerned to construct protection bunds and retention walls at the vulnerable places to minimize the scale of damages in future.. He said that measures like plantation of bamboo would be initiated to avoid soil erosion which is the main cause behind massive landslides and subsequent damages to crops of residential houses. He instructed the Power Development Department to ensure early restoration of snapped power supply to the affected areas, while the PWD department was asked to start renovation work on damaged roads to avoid any mishap. He directed the administration to remain prepared to deal with any man made or natural disasters. Sharma informed that the people who were rendered houseless due to the calamity would be provided Rs. 35,000 either under Indira Awas (IAY) or under Natural Calamity Relief Fund (NCRF), besides Rs. 2000 for purchasing utensils and other house hold items. He called for involving Panchs and Sarpanchs in the restoration works to ensure close monitoring, use of quality material and timely completion. He said the rural bodies can play a key role in expediting the rehabilitation of affected people and restoration of the damaged infrastructure Earlier, the DDC, Sanjeev Verma informed the meeting that the administration has already launched the survey to assess the losses to crops, houses and other public utilities in the affected villages. He said the administration has geared up the pace of restoration work by providing adequate men and machinery.
