Plantation drive organised | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, September 12: Today on the eve of “My Earth- My Duty Campaign” and International year of Forest 2011 GGPEP and NYK Jammu organized plantation drive by planting trees on the waste land at a village Samka, in which 100 volunteer took active part and 100 plants. While speaking Choudary said as we know that one third of the Earth’s total land area is covered by forest. The forest are store house of Biodiversity as they contain most vibrant ecosystem and display a wondrous variety of plants, animal and micro organisms. Also the wide base of biodiversity of forest provides many environmental services to mankind. As predictive function they are bases for more than 5000 products that include woof fruits alkaloids, essential oils, aromatic compounds, latex and pharmaceuticals etc. As protective function forest prevent soil erosion, conserve water, present drought, shelter against wind, radiation, noise and small etc. the regulative functions of forests include absorption, storage and release of gases. Forests are also a source of inspiration to us in art, literature, research and religion as they are essential for well being of humans the dominant species on the earth. Today, the forests are facing immense challenges and different kinds of pressure. According to FAO ( Food and Agriculture organization ). Every year 13,000 square km of the world’s forest are lost due to deforestation. It is an eye opening fact that deforestation accounts 20% of green houses gas emission that contribute to global warming. It is the word’s forest and forest soil that store more than trillion tons of carbon twice the amount found in the atmosphere the about two thirds of all species on the earth. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on a message read at Kanazawa “let’s us continue working to ensure that life on the earth will persist in all its diversity and complexity for benefits of present and future generation.”
