Widow gangraped in holy Katra town; accused held

KATRA: A widow, who Sunday came to the holy town to have darshans of Mata Vaishno Devi in the Trikuta Hills, was allegedly gangraped in a private guest house here Sunday.
Guddi Devi (34), a widow, arrived here yesterday at about 12.30 pm from home at Ramnagar in Udhampur for the darshans of Mata Vaishno Devi.
Police sources said she was received at the bus stand here by her acquaintance Ranjit Singh, son of Karan Singh of Pouni, Reasi, and taken to the nearby Hari Om Guest House owned by Sushil Singh, son of Vakil Singh of Sainlanjan, Reasi.
In the guest house, she was allegedly raped by Ranjit and five other youth, the sources added.
In the evening, they dumped the woman in a Maruti van (JK02J/6155) and then threw her out from the moving vehicle on railway road on the outskirts of the town as a result of which she was wounded.
After the matter came to his notice, Katra police station SHO, Inspector Vinod Kumar Kundal, rushed to the spot and evacuated Guddi to the hospital here for treatment.
Later, in her statement, she told police that she had allegedly been gangraped in the guest house.
Acting swiftly, police raided the guest house and arrested five of the rape accused.
They included Ranjit, Sanjay Singh, son of Kapur Singh of Reasi, Sanjay Kumar, son of Paras Ram of Salal, Khurshid Ahmad alias Bittoo, son of Mohammad Latief of Ramnagar and Kamal Singh, son of Ram Singh of Salal.
Sixth alleged rape accused Purshotam Singh fled the spot and was evading arrest.
During investigation, police came to know that it was Ranjit who had dumped the woman into the van, which was being driven by Darshan Singh, son of Suram Singh of T-Morh.
Darshan too was arrested by police and booked in a case of kidnapping. His van was also seized.
The guest house owner was also arrested and booked under relevant sections of law.
Police had booked the accused under sections 376, 364, 120-B and 323 of RPC. Raids were being carried out by police to apprehend the escaped accused.
Guddi was also got medically examined at the hospital.
