Delhi HC blast further recede possibility Of amnesty to Afzal Guru. | | yash Bhasin | 9/13/2011 12:41:40 AM |
| If The Delhi High Court blast on September 7 was really meant to pressurise India to grant amnesty to 2001 Parliament attack convict, Afzal Guru on death row, as claimed by Harqt-Ul-Jihad Islami (Huji), who had the very same day owned the responsibility for the blast, the same has proved counter productive. The blast that has killed 13 persons so far and wounded about 90 others, with some of them losing their limbs or suffering other permanent disabilities, has only strengthened the resolve of the nation to take head on the terrorists, showing no mercy to them. The opinion against granting amnesty to Afzal Guru, which was already overwhelming, has further swelled. On the Star Plus electronic channel debate held two days after the blast, the participants belonging to both the ruling and opposition parties were unanimous on tackling terrorism with iron hands and opposing any clemency to Afzal Guru. Besides the Anti Terrorist Front President, Manpreet Singh Bitta, a Youth Congress leader basically and Shiv Sehna turned Congress leader and Union Minister, Sanjay Nirotam expressed them selves against granting amnesty to Afzal Guru and not surrendering before the threats and blackmail by the enemies of the country. The BJP spokespersons, Mukhtiar Abbas Naqbi and the CPIM representative in the debate forcefully opposed granting clemency to Afzal Guru and pleaded for dealing with the terrorists with determination, using deterrent methods. Many Muslim organisations and the community leaders have condemned the cowardly act with the same force as have done the leaders of other religious communities. So much so that otherwise sympathetic and friendly to the Kashmiri terrorists in J&K are also obliged to condemn the blast, though for the sake of record only. Both factions of Hurriyat Conference, one lead by Maulvi Umar Farooq and the other lead by the hard core secessionist and Islamic fundamentalist leader Sayeed Ali Shah Gelani could not help condemning the blast, terming it an un Islamic act. It is another thing that Gelani supports and defends the violent protests by Kashmiri youths, calling them as freedom fighters. Notably, Gelani’s statement condemning Delhi High Court blast was not accompanied by threats of reprisal and blood shed in Kashmir if Afzal Guru is hanged. He had issued warning to this effect earlier, when Afzal Guru’s mercy plea was rejected by the President of India. Obviously, he is put in defensive by the dastardly act of terrorists, whose Kashmir links are suspected. As far moderate Hurriyat conference and its Chief, Maulvi Umar Farooq is concerned, his any assertion for clemency to Afzal Guru will now be taken with a pitch of salt and termed as done out of compulsion of situation in Kashmir and fear of meeting the fate his late father as well as his party colleague Abdul Gani Lone had met at the hands of Kashmiri terrorists. After the Whikileak’s’ disclosure of Umar’s talk with US diplomat, favouring death sentence to Guru, if he is really guilty, any plea by him for amnesty to Afzal Guru will be lacking sincerity in public perception. The JKLF leader Yasin Malik who himself is charged of involvement in killing of 4 IAF officers in Srinagar, at initial stage of militancy in Kashmir, two had to condemn the blast in strong terms. Still another terrorist sympathetic, so called main stream party in Kashmir, the PDP too condemned the same, without reiterating its advocacy for clemency to Afzal Guru. Above all, Afzal Guru himself has distanced him from his pending hanging prompting the perpetrators of the crime, calling it against Islamic principles. This is the major defeat to the terrorists who have committed the heinous crime, which they claim to have been committed to safe Afzal Guru from gallows. The demands for early hanging Afzal Guru and against any clemency to him have become louder and more forceful. Fearing its backlash in Jammu region, where they have main support base, the Congress leader of Jammu have cautioned the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah against advocating clemency for Afzal Guru and have given clear cut hint of their opposition to resolution in the state assembly in this regard. With BJP upping its ante for early hanging of Afzal Guru and against any leniency towards the terrorists, the Congress at the national level is put in defence for its silence to tweet by its alliance partner in J&K, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, suggesting J&K assembly adopting resolution pleading amnesty to Afzal Guru, on the lines of Tamilnadu assembly unanimously adopting a resolution, urging the President of India to reconsidered her rejection of mercy pleas on behalf of the killers of late Congress leader and a former Prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi. Any revision of the decision by the President and the Central govt to the rejection of clemency to the Rajeev killers as well as to Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, a Kashmiri, which was already in doubt, has now become next to impossible. The opinion in the country against showing any leniency towards the wagers of war on the country, has gained further strength and the advocates of soft line towards the country’s enemies has lost further ground in the wake of blast outside Delhi High Court. Sensing the moved in the country, the otherwise advocates of soft line towards the terrorist and those who confuse and try to divert people’s attention from the fountain head of terrorism, Pakistan, like Congress Gen. Secy. Digvijay Singh have resisted the temptation to indulge in RSS and BJP bashing by suggesting possibility of their involvement in the blast. Digvijay Singh had done so in the case of recent blast in Mumbai, charging RSS of running a bomb making factory. The other reason for Digvijay Singh and his like minded traditional RSS bashing politicians for no blaming RSS for Delhi blast, has been that the BJP could counter charge the Congress of having links with the blast, to divert the attention of the country from Anna Hazare’s crusade against corruption and wide support to the same in the country, which is hitting hard the electoral prospects of Congress. The silence over the act by the Congress heir apparent Rahul Gandhi, is intriguing. After being hackled and shouted down on his visit to Ram Manhor Lohia hospital to seek publicity for his showing concern to the victims of blast, Rahul went almost underground. Against Rahul’s boomeranged moved to steel the lime light, his cousin Varun Gandhi has shown more sincerity about his sympathy for the injured in the blast. Varun is learned to have visited RML hospital without much fan fare, donated the blood for the victims and left, unnoticed by many
