Sumit Grover wins State Chess Championship

Sumit Gorver proved his supremacy by clinching the State Chess Championship title (boys) by securing total 19.5 points as the championship was concluded at Luthra Building here today. Ajit Singh of Udhampur with 18.5 points and Harvinder Singh with 18 points finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Comrade Gowhar with 16 points stood 4th in the championship. The championship was conducted by theAll J&K State Chess Association and sponsored by Gitanjali Industries. Total 37 players from different districts of the state had participated in the championship. Choudhary Lal Singh MP who is also the Chief Patron of the All J&K Chess Association was the chief guest on the occasion who distributed the prizes among the winners and runners up players. In his address, he was all praise for the Chess Association especially Atul Kumar who himself is a chess player and also President of All J&K Chess Association for his efforts in promoting the game in the state by conducting such tournaments at regular intervals to tap the young and promising chess players of the state to prove their mettle at higher level of the game. He also assured the association for all possible help for the upliftment of the game in the state. However, Atul Kumar will also participate in the forthcoming National ‘B’ Chess Championship which is scheduled to be held at Ahmedabad from September 1 to September 10as he was directly allowed by the All India Chess Federation to participate in the championship. The top four chess players of the state would also participate in the aforesaid chess championship. Following are the results of the final round:
Sumit Grover drew with Ajit Singh, Comrade Gowhar bt Arvindu, Harvinder Singh bt Rajinder Singh, Ashwani Gupta bt Sat Pal Singh, Pardeep Kumar bt Wasim Khandey, Ashok Safaya bt Bharat Grover, Ram Singh bt Dinesh Rajput, Manmeet Singh bt Surinder Kumar Sharma, Ritwan Sountra bt Vikrant Sharma, Victor Gupta bt T.S. Charak, Suresh Chander bt Ansh Gupta, Vinay Puri bt Inder Raj, Ishan bt Hemant Kumar, Joginder Singh bt Suresh Kalaria, Suresh Raina bt Inder Kumar, Agrim Pandotra got walkover R.D. Sharma, Vandit Gandotara bt Varun Sharma, Sahil Bindra got walkover Ankit Sharma and Anil Kumar Khar got bye.
