Police modernization to continue in Jammu Kashmir: Govt.

Jammu,Sept 13:-The National Conference led Government in Jammu and Kashmir has requested the central Government to continue to assist the state in modernization of the police force.
Official sources said that the centrally sponsored police modernization project in Jammu and Kashmir has been initiated since 1992 and the state Government wants the financial and technical assistance to continue so that all police ranks were equipped with sophisticated weapons.
The state Government, reports said, has conveyed to the centre that though the level of militancy related activities and violence in Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed marked decline during the last three years but there was need for greater vigil so that the residual militancy was finished.
The centre has been informed that agencies across the border to push groups of militants, especially foreign mercenaries into Jammu and Kashmir, and for tackling any eventuality the state police had to be equipped with better weapons and means of communication and transport.
The state needs several hundred crores of rupees for upgrading the communication and transport system. The state Government is thankful to the centre for having framed a 10-year project on modernization of police in Jammu and Kashmir which had ended last year.
Senior police officers said that modernization of police and increasing its manpower should be a regular affair. They said the police in the state needed new jeeps, vans, buses, sophisticated communication system for improving the mobility of the police.
They said there was need for raising 10 new police battalions within next three year and for equipping more police companies with non-lethal weapons required for tackling civilian strife without causing any casualty.
Sources said that the central Government plans to make available sophisticated weapons, improved communication system and better transport facilities by sanctioning jeeps, vans for the police in Jammu and Kashmir
