India, Pakistan don't have shared destiny | Bartering J&K? | | Rustam Jammu, Sept 13: Jammu's political class and the arch rivals of the Congress at the national level, including the "ultra" nationalist BJP, have, it seems, abdicated their responsibility towards the nation. The BJP at the national level do make some noises to convince the nation that it is committed to protecting and promoting further the unity and integrity of India and opposing policies calculated to befriend Pakistan and its agents in Kashmir, but does nothing whatever in concrete terms to give effect to what it sometimes say to demonstrate that it is a party with a difference. In fact, one can cite a number of instances to prove that the Congress, which is the root cause of all the ills, including the mess in Jammu and Kashmir, and the BJP are almost on the same page as far as attitude to this border state is concerned. It would be only reasonable to say that the present Congress-led dispensation at the centre is only treading with an alarming speed the path charted by Atal Bihari Vajpayee during his regime. It was he who dumbfounded the nation by telling Pakistan and Kashmiri separatists that he was prepared to resolve the issue within the parameters of "Insaniyat". It was not statecraft; it was its negation. The fact of the matter is that the national parties like the Congress and the BJP have disappointed the nation by pursuing weak-kneed policies towards Pakistan and separatists in Kashmir. Since these and other parties are involved in mere politicking for promoting their respective political interests, it is the concerned citizens across the nation who have been trying to project the national issues, including the issue of Jammu and Kashmir, and asking the political leadership to discharge their obligations towards the nation. It happened yesterday as well, when two concerned Indians - Professor Hari Om, formerly Maharaja Gulab Singh Chair Professor and Member Indian Council of Historical Research, and Dr Ajay Chrungoo, a Panun Kashmir activist and ideologue - questioned the Kashmir policy of the Union Government and candidly told the custodians of the Indian State that the nation would not tolerate anything non-sense and that they, like all other patriotic citizens and friends and well-wishers of the country, would not accept anything short of complete integration of the state into India. "Patriotic citizens in Jammu and Kashmir are ready for all sacrifices to stop any compromise with the separatists that will jeopardize the unity of India, its sovereignty and the vision of secularism," they told reporters. It would be only appropriate to quote them verbatim to put across their point of view which every concerned citizen of the country would surely appreciate. They said: "We take this opportunity to warn the Government of India about the consequences of any attempt to placate the separatist constituency in Jammu and Kashmir by accepting or providing credibility to their views on accession and the constitutional relationship of Jammu and Kashmir with the Union of India through the instrumentality of Interlocutors in a bid to sue for peace with Pakistan. We believe such search for peace will only prove to be a mirage and undermine the integrity and unity of whole of India. The views which the present group of interlocutors held before being appointed as the interlocutors, their utterances and the way they have conducted themselves as interlocutors, have only raised apprehensions about their ability to uphold vital national interests in Jammu and Kashmir". They also said: "The overwhelming majority of patriotic citizens of Jammu and Kashmir will not countenance with any recommendation, observation or inference of the interlocutors which seeks directly or indirectly or by implication to accept the view that accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India was conditional. They will unambiguously reject all such perspectives or recommendations which seek to change the transitory nature of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir to a permanent clause of the Constitution of India (read Article 370). Patriotic citizens of the state will also reject any recommendation which directly or indirectly or by inference seeks to divide Jammu province" (read the pernicious Chenab formula or Farooq Kathwari formula. They did not stop here. They went on to say, "We also want to state very clearly that people of India have no shared destiny with Pakistan because Pakistan was created as an ideological state which seeks to destroy India. (Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has, according to Wikileaks, stated that India and Pakistan have shared destiny.) They refer Concepts of 'Shared sovereignty, irrelevant borders and we cannot change our neighbors' emanate from this flawed and dangerous perspectives of a shared destiny with Pakistan. We want to state with emphasis that destiny of secularism in India is not incremental capitulation to communalism which the concepts of creating permanent spheres of Muslim interests on the territory of India underline. Creating religious domains and couching them in secular jargon will not buy India peace but will prove to be destructive of the unity of India". The operative part of what they said was like this: "We will hold the Government of India primarily and squarely responsible for any misadventures by the group of Interlocutors. We once again state that separatists, soft separatists or semi-separatists are not spearheading any freedom movement in Jammu and Kashmir. They are spearheading a regressive campaign to destroy all freedoms which mankind should have. The Government of India should resolve to defeat separatism ideologically, politically and militarily and not through suicidal expediency which it has pursued so far". One can only hope and pray that the good sense would finally prevail and the Indian political rise to the occasion and defeat comprehensively those seeking to undermine the very idea of India. This is the need of the nation and the exigency of the time. |
