Geelani's support for UN probe intriguing | | | One should not feel amazed over the latest statement of Hurriyat (G) chairman,Syed Ali Shah Geelani,in which he has rejected Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah's plea for setting up a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) for resolving the controversy over the "unmarked graves" in the Kashmir valley.Over the years the Kashmiri separatists have survived politically by opposing whatever the Government proposes.Instead of allowing Chief Minister a chance to settle the mystery over the unmarked graves with the help of the TRC Geelani has called for a UN appointed commission for looking into the issue. He has appealed to the UN Secretary General,Ban ki Moon,to set up a fact finding mission for unravelling the mytery behind the unmarked graves. In support of his demand for a UN appointed commission Geelni has stated that he has no faith in the Government appointed TRC or a fact finding mission because it is the same Government that has committed and continue to commit various human rights violations. Whether Geelani has faith in the State Government appointed TRC or not his demand for a UN appointed commission is based on his prolonged idea of internationalising the Kashmir issue.By seeking UN appointed mission to probe into the unmarked graves controversy Geelani wants a UN team to be present in Srinagar which was enough to ridicule the Government of India and the NC led Government in Jammu and Kashmir in the way the presence of the UN Military Observers Group(UNMOG) in the state has brought the Kashmir issue in focus internationally.Geelani needs to be reminded that there cannot be any gurantee for an impartial probe by the UN appointed body because the pro-Pakistan bias invariably displayed by officials of the UNMOG has forced the Government of India to ignore and sideline these UNMOG officials since early 80's.It was done when the UN observers paid little heed to India's complain against Pakistan for border violations. Inside reports said that politically it could not have been possible for Geelani to accept a TRC as suggested by Omar Abdullah because right from 1948 Geelani has been one among those supporting and favouring implementation of the UN resolution on Kashmir which provides for a plebiscite. It seems that Geelani has become so much desperate by the gradual improvement in the security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir that he is not prepared to accept a solution to the Kashmir issue which may been hammered out by India and Pakistan in the bilateral dialogue.Geelani has stated that "we" will not accept a solution or formula evolved by India and Pakistan during the bilateral talks. He said "we shall accept only right of self-determination for the people of the state as provided in the UN resolution on Kashmir."This indicates slight shift in Geelani's earlier stand on the issue. For years together he used to plead for involvement of Pakistan in the process of dialogue for settling the Kashmir issue and now he is not willing to accept any solution or formula except right of self-determination provided in UN resolution because he has fears that Islamabad may,in the interest of good neighbourly relations, opt for any other formula than right of self-determination for resolving the Kashmir issue
