CM’s Table Tennis `orphaned’ by Council

JAMMU, Sept 14:-Unconcerned about the future of young trainees, the State Sports Council left the state’s only coaching centre of most liked game of table tennis without coach for the last two years.
Surprisingly, the game which affected due to the wrong policies of the autonomous sports body is belongs to none other than the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, who is president of the Jammu and Kashmir Table Tennis Association.
In fact, by transferring the only table tennis coach in the state to district Udhampur as manager sports stadium there, the State Sports Council virtually `orphaned’ this indoor game.
Interestingly, the Sports Council overhauled the table tennis hall on modern lines by completely renovating it last year investing a lot of money, but forgot to provide a coach to train the young boys and girls.
At one point of time there were over 200 strength at the table tennis hall, but as of now, just 30 trainees come to spend time.
It is true that there is no dearth of talent in the state, but the way system works, the young enthusiasts are being discouraged one or the other way. Finding two boys from far off areas of the city unattended at the table tennis hall speaks lauder about the non-serious approach of the Sports Council.
Young Raghunandan came all the way from Miran Sahib to seek coaching while Rajat Thakur belongs to R S Pura. “Earlier, there was a coach at the hall but for the last two weeks there is no body to teach us the basics of the game,” said Rajat Thakur, who comes daily from R S Pura.
Another young trainee at the hall was Sawan, a 10-year old from Rehari area of the city.
Important to mention here that only qualified person deputed at the table tennis hall during the last two years was Ravish Vaid that too for a brief stint of two months.
Only second diploma holder from NIS in the state after Satish Gupta, Ravish serves with Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) and was on two-month deputation.
However, Ravish’s deputation was not extended by DYSS after State Sports Council’s denial of infrastructure to the Department for holding inter-school activities.
“One can well imagine that to which direction sports would go from here when the game led by Chief Minister and president of the State Sports Council, Omar Abdullah is being ignored in the state,” a veteran table tennis player, Ramesh Magotra told SAN.
