| BJP to fight for "self-esteem" and "honour" of state party president | | Ape Anna Hazare | | Rustam
JAMMU, Sept 14: Jammu and Kashmir is passing through critical times. In fact, the very future of the state is at stake as the pro-separatists, autonomists, votaries of self-rule, Pakistan and independence and their supporters in and outside India have ganged up and intensified their hate and break-India campaign, coupled with nefarious activities. It was the time for those who call themselves nationalists and pro-Jammu and pro-ethnic and religious minorities in the state to regroup themselves and devise and implement roadmap designed to defeat the separatists and those out to break India and seek another communal partition.
The state unit of the BJP also terms it as an ultra nationalist outfit, as also an outfit with a difference. It was obvious that the people would expect that the BJP leadership would conduct itself in a manner that makes the people believe in what the local BJP leadership says. It would not be inappropriate to say that the local BJP leadership is made of a different stuff. At a time when things in the state have assumed alarming proportions, the BJP leadership has made a mockery of itself by describing the security cover provided to the chicken-hearted and mortally afraid political leaders as symbols of "self-esteem and honour" and describing the withdrawal of the security to the state BJP president as a humiliation".
Nobody would appreciate the decision of the vindictive authorities in the state to distinguish between presidents of the Kashmir-based NC, Congress, PDP and CPI-M and the state BJP president. Presidents of all the established political parties, including the BJP, must be treated at par with each other. There is no dispute on this count. But it raises many questions when the state BJP reduces the whole issue to "self-esteem, honour and humiliation". Had the BJP told the government that it would be held squarely responsible if something bad happens to the state BJP president, everyone would have appreciated the stand of the BJP. But by making a statement that the BJP would launch a struggle against the state government for the kind of treatment it has subjected the state BJP chief to the BJP leadership has simply exposed itself and established that it is interested more in personal safety and security than in the issues of national import as well as issues of Jammu import.
By the way, who is afraid of the state BJP president, who is not really active and who most of the time remains confined within the four walls of his party office where petty politicking reigns supreme? Yes, he does issue statements at intervals to remain in focus, but there is hardly anyone in Jammu, except a few supporters of the party president, who pay any heed to his statements because his statements and statements issues by other state BJP leaders are so vague, so confusing and so contradictory. It's no wonder that the people term the bulk of the state BJP leadership "intellectually sterile and bankrupt".
But to talk of the people of Jammu province, even the Kashmiri leadership is not afraid of the state BJP president, or for that matter, the entire BJP leadership and there are reasons for that. One of the reasons is that most of the BJP leaders are quite amenable. The fact of the matter is that the BJP leadership has lost its credibility by not only abandoning the people of Jammu province as well as by abandoning the nation-centric issues but also by displaying "political debauchery" during the 2009 Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections and in the April 2011 Legislative Council elections. It would not be out of place to mention here that there are many people who term most of the "BJP legislators as the
NC, Congress and PDP agents in the BJP party". One can catalogue here scores and scores of instances to prove that the BJP in the state has lost its way and to show that the BJP vassal is slowly but steadily drifting towards the rock. It doesn't have a steersman at this point in time and the manner it is conducting itself leaves none in any doubt that the BJP, like the Congress, is in a self-destruction mode.
However, to say all this is not to convey the impression that the BJP cannot retrieve the lost ground. It can. But the question is" Is the state BJP leadership prepared to ape Anna Hazare, who only recently showed nation the way? He inflicted a crushing defeat on the otherwise very powerful and arrogant Union Government, but he rejected outright the move of the government to provide him Z security. Rejecting the official move, Anna said "he is not afraid of anybody; he is a man of the masses and he would always want to live among them and work for them and the nation without fear and favour". Men with mass experience never require security cover; for, the people are their security cover. The state BJP leadership would do well to imitate Anna and similar other leaders who work day and night without fearing for their life. In other words, the local BJP leadership should fight for the self-respect and honour of the nation, including its core constituency Jammu province. This would help it to a considerable extent. |
