Allegations against JU, BGBSU administration galore; probe nowhere in sight | Insiders making too much noise! | | Sumit Sharma JAMMU, Sept 14: A word has been spread in the academic circles that state government has ordered an inquiry into alleged financial irregularities in Jammu University (JU) and misuse of power by those who have headed this institution. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is skipping every meet, official functions and programme where Jammu University is involved. Gossip is that Chief Minister does not want to share table with Vice-Chancellor Prof. Varun Sahini. Ask for reasons and they would remind you about infamous audio snag during Mega Show-2011 titled "silk route-A Colourful Journey of Himalayan Mysteries" organized by Kashmirink Events at Zorawar Singh Auditorium on April 23, 2011. The snag had not only irked Chief Minister Omar Abdullah but infuriated him to such an extent that he was seen shouting for the first time in anger in full pubic view. The audio resulted in Omar seeking an inquiry into the matter. The reason at that time for seeking an inquiry was that there was no one to handle the issue. Neither the Vice-Chancellor nor administrator of the General Zorawar Singh Auditorium was present at the programme despite the fact that Chief Minister was the chief guest at the function. Later, if insiders are to be believed, state government constituted a four member committee to probe into alleged financial irregularities and administrative lapses by authorities in Jammu University especially in the construction of General Zorawar Singh auditorium. They added that the committee had been asked to dig deep and find out the amount of money embezzled. However, while the committee is probing, its whereabouts are not known and if certain close confidents of VC are to be believed, issue has fizzled out with university allowing political class of the state to get their close ones accommodated. The issue is now a gossip which can be heard in every corner of the university. Taking a leaf out of Jammu university issue, insiders in Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) have 'purchased loudspeakers' from the market and are making announcements from hill-tops of university that blue-eyed ones are being accommodated in the university on the recommendations of Congress and National Conference (NC) leaders. They are being given jobs in complete violation of norms. Early Times is not in possession of a genie but is receiving seemingly credible inputs and copies of complaints addressed to Governor N.N. Vohra urging him to intervene and put an end to, what they are terming as administrative anarchy in the University. They have urging Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to initiate time bound inquiry into alleged incidents of nepotism so that apprehensions and misgivings of all could be removed. However, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who has been taking very little interest in the functioning of universities and not only this, relaying on the official inputs, is unlikely to pursue the matter and ensure that institutions are not damaged merely because certain people both from within the university and outside have doubts. Insiders maintain that if a probe is not ordered, misgivings are going to further aggravate the situation. |
