56th tree-talk held at RRL | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Sept 15 (KNS): The 56th series of popular environment programme ‘tree talk’ was organized in Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine previously known as RRL Srinagar on Thursday. More than 60 people including senior scientists, forest officers, floriculturists, horticulturists, medicinal plant growers, small scale entrepreneurs and research students took part in the programme. ‘Tree-talk’ crusader O P Sharma highlighted the diversity of native agricultural and horticultural crops and its connectivity with wild plants seen growing in forests of Kashmir. He underlined the need of tree conservation to conserve medicinal resource as without tree canopy, herbs, shrubs and climbers cannot sustain their existence. Dr A S Shawl, Head IIIM Sanat Nagar highlighted latest research initiatives of IIIM Lab regarding extraction of Bioactive chemical compounds from medicinal and aromatic plants like Rosemary, Hyssop, Melissa, Artemisia, Origanum, Lavander, Bulgarian, Iris, Peppermint, Sweet Flag, Inula, Heracleum which have proven market value and medicinal potential to add to state economy. S Gurcharan Singh highlighted that Forest department under the stewardship of H S Pathania and S Sohan Singh while greening barren Shankracharya hill, got introduced rare species like Pinus gerardiana alongwith magnificent Himalyan Cedar and Horsechestnut trees of exquisite beauty. Next ‘tree-talk’ is slated to held at Boniyar, Baramulla on September 20 at 9 am.
