| NH remained closed, fresh snowfall in Patnitop, Sanasar | | | Jammu, Dec 5 The 300-km long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed for vehicular traffic on Tuesday as landslides triggered by heavy rains blocked the arterial road that connects Kashmir with the rest of the country. After remaining open for few hours for only one way traffic on Monday national highway authorities stopped vehicular movement on Monday evening as shooting stones and heavy landslides blocked the traffic on the highway between Ramban and Jawahar tunnel. Overnight rains and fresh spell of snowfall on Tuesaday morning in upper reaches forced the authorities to stop traffic on the highway as inclement weather conditions prevailed affecting road claering operations. Reports reaching here said that continued spells of rain and fresh snowfall in the upper reaches were hampering road clearing operations along the 300 km long national highway even as large number of workers of Border Roads Organisation have been pressed in to service for road clearing operations along with heavy machinery. DSP National highway said that more than 80 load carries were stranded near Ramban as road was blocked at several places. Meanwhile, hills of Patnitop and famous tourist resort of Sanasar also witnessed fresh snowfall on Tuesday whereas plains of Jammu region witnessed continued spells of rain intensifying cold wave conditions. Border districts of Rajouri and Poonch too have been witnessing uninterrupted rainfall for more than 96 hours and fresh snowfall was also reported from Loran,Mandi,Sabzian,Surankote,Hill Kaka along the line of control. Reports reaching here said that army authorities have already started snow clearing operations to avoid inconvenience to jawans.”We have launched snow clearing operations wherever necessary to maintain flow of traffic”,a senior army officer said in Poonch. In Jammu and elsewhere continued spells of rain affected daily life as most of the residents stayed indoors and main city markets witnessed thin attendance. |
