They want books and pens, not guns
9/15/2011 10:19:11 PM
When several hundred people, most of them students, staged demonstrations in Muzaffarabad capital city of Pakistan occupied Kashmir on Tuesday in protest against the plan and activities of militants in the border belt it reflected the level of anger and disgust against those agencies, officials and nonofficials, that provided moral and material aid to the terrorists. The demonstrat ors threatened to march to Islamabad if the establishment in Pakistan and occupied Kashmir failed to end the menace of terrorism. The protesters seemed to be keen to ensure peace and stability not only in Pakistan occupid Kashmir but in Jammu and Kashmir state also. The only reason for the protest march was growing threat to peace from the Jihadis whose number had swelled in recent months. The protesters wanted the Government to initiate measurs that could sanitise the entire Indo-Pak border belt in Jammu and Kashmir against the Jihadis.
In fact the protesters were irked by the way officials had started harrassing those, including women, who had protested against radicals.Sensing that the radicals and the terrorists received support and patronage from the official agencis people staged protest demonstrations in a bid to motivate or compel the Government to deal firmly with terrorists.Protesters felt that these Jihadis were a threat to peace and urged both Islamabad and New Delhi to remain engaged in a purposeful dialogue so that the existing border ceasefire agreement between the two sides was not broken.Majority of people in Pakistan occupied Kashmir seem to have been fed up with the activities of militants who were trying to recruit students in their outfits.Such development was bound to destabilise peace and the border ceasefire agreement.People want the Government and its agencies to give books and pens, not guns,to the students.
Whatever may have been the number of protesters all of them deserve appreciation for the courage they have shown in castigating the Jihadis whom they hold responsible for derailing peace process being worked out between India and Pakistan. They need to be lauded for holding Pakistan and the establishment in Muzaffarabad responsible for providing material support to the terrorists. They deserve praise for seeking an end to the ongoing plan of using the territory of Pakistan and occupied Kashmir for exporting terror to India and Jammu and Kashmir. They want immediate steps for preventing agencies from exporting terror from the soil of Pakistan to India. Can such a courage be displayed by people in the Kashmir valley where the 21-year long militancy had been instrumental for largescale death and destruction? Possibilities are dim despite the fact that majority of people in the valley have suffered and continue to suffer on account of Pakistan sponsord proxy war.T hey would have protested against militants but they continue to be misled by not only Pakistani propaganda but by the ill conceived sermons of the separatists.Kashmir calls for rise of a civil society that could blunt the pro-Pakistan and pro-Jihadi propaganda.
