“Withdrawal of security vindictive”, says BJP leader | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 15: The leadership of the state unit of the BJP feels highly upset over the way the Government has withdrawn security cover not only to the party chief,Shamsher Singh, but also to a large number of BJP leaders and senior activists in various areas of the Jammu region. Describing Government decision "vindictive" senior BJP leader,Dr Nirmal Singh, said that security cover to a number of BJP leaders, living and moving about in militancy infested areas of Doda,Kishtwar,Poonch and Rajouri, had been removed without any reason. Nirmal Singh was of the opinion that among a number of political leaders, belonging to the mainstream segment,BJP leaders deserved top priority as far as bringing them under the security cover is concerned. He said that as far as the issue of providing security cover was concerned the Government was not following any set norm. He said that number of political activists,of no consequence and importance, belonging to the National Conference and the Congress enjoyed full security cover. In reply to a question he said that the matter pertaining to security was being reviewed without any proper norms."It was simply a pick and choose method the authorities followed in sanctioning or withdrawing or reducing the security cover,"he added. The BJP leader expressed surprise over the way separatists and anti-India elements in the state were provided a security cover by the Government when they did not need it whereas those on the hit list of militants were not given any security cover. In various cases even unimportant political leaders were provided with bullet proof car with free petrol. He held the Government and its agencies responsible for violating basic norms framed for sanctioning security cover to political activists and leaders. Nirmal Singh ridiculed the Government for adopting pick and choose strategy while sanctioning exgratia relief to the kins of those who had lost their dear ones in road accidents. He said that during the last one year scores of people, including women and children, were killed in road accidents in various areas of the region of Jammu. But exgratia relief was sanctioned in a few cases. The BJP leader said that instead of following set norms the Government, rather the ruling alliance leaders, were motivated by the pull of vote bank and their personal likes and dislikes. In spport of his contention he cited the instance of Poonch where exgratia relief was given to the kins of those who had lost their lives in road accidents.Against this bigger road accidents took place in the districts of Doda,Kishtwar and Kathua besides the rcent mishap in Ramban He said the National Conference leadership was not interested in sanctioning exgratia if road mishaps take place in areas which are not represented in the Assembly by its leaders. Nirmal Singh said he had written a letter to Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, suggesting him to be fair in sanctining exgratia relief to road accident victims but there was no response. He said that he had also delivered a letter to Union Minister and NC President,Dr Farooq Abdullah, who had expressed surprise saying that it should not happen but the state authorities are yet unmoved. He demanded a white paper from the Government on the norms it was following for sanctioning exgratia relief and security cover to political leaders.(eom) |
