Early Times Report
LEH, Sept 15 : The Chief Minister today talked about preservation of state's eco- system.
Laying stress on balanced growth of tourism for enhancing economic activities and creating job facilities, the Chief Minister said "we should equally concentrate on maintenance, preservation and conservation of the eco-system, culture and heritage of the State under all circumstances". He was addressing the concluding function of 15-Day Ladakh Tourism Festival, organized by the State Tourism Department at Leh.
The Sheikh family seems obsessed with golf. They vandalized the city forest to make what now is known as Royal Springs Golf Course.
A few people in the state play golf. These include the editors of a few local dailies, Former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah's political advisor, Davender Singh Rana and some bureaucrats. For these privileged people, forests, eco-system and environment are vandalized.
According to environmentalists, vandalization of the City forest will kill Dal Lake.
"This was its (lake's) most important catchment area. For saving the Dal, we have to vandalize the Royal Springs Golf Course, leave it alone for a couple of years to allow revival of the forest ", said an expert preferring anonymity.
Now the Chief Minister speaks of preserving the environment. He also talks about having a 18-hole golf course in an environmentally fragile area like Leh.
Ladakh has huge tourism potential. Trekking, rock climbing and rafting if promoted can earn the state much needed revenue. The government better concentrate on these areas. The tourists can play golf elsewhere in the state.
As rightly pointed out by the Chief Minister, the state already is on the map of world golf destinations. How has it helped the state?
How have these golf courses promoted tourism? And, how have these golf courses helped promoting the game in the state? The Chief Minister must answer these questions before going for another golf course.
