| 7-day sanitation awareness prog gets underway | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, Sep 16:-Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand today sought active public cooperation to keep the beautiful valley of Kashmir pollution free.
Flagging off mobile platform healthy buzz to kickstart 7-day awareness programme here this morning, Tara Chand said all the stakeholders should synergize efforts to spread public awareness about keeping the environs clean with focus on protection and conservation of water-bodies.
“It is our prime responsibility to safeguard our land, forest and water resources”, he said, adding the younger generation needs to be sensitized about the importance of preserving the heavenly beauty of Kashmir.
Minister of State, Nasir Aslam Wani highlighted the need to develop good sanitary habits among the children while calling for sustained cleanliness awareness programme round the year.
To woo tourists continuously to Jammu and Kashmir, Nasir said the tourist spots need to be made more attractive for which sanitation has to be given focused attention. “God has blessed us with lot of natural bounties”, he said urging the people to contribute in their maintenance and upkeep.
Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Sheikh Mushtaq in his speech urged the people to discourage use of polythene, cautioning that it was harmful to public health. He said his department will continue crackdown on the shopkeepers indulging in sale and storage of polythene.
Recently, he said Rs 60,000 fine was imposed on the shopkeepers for sale of polythene on a single day. He appealed the people to extend full cooperation in discouraging use of polythene completely.
Among others, Joint Commissioner, Fayaz Ahmad Bhalla and Municipality staff, senior citizens were present on the occasion.
