Omar appreciates Sham for receiving best Agriculture leadership Award | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Sep 16:-Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah Friday underlining the importance of horticulture in the State’s economy adding that focused attention is required for its integrated and comprehensive development. Omar said that agriculture and allied sectors offer greater promises to educated youth for earning respectable livelihood and catapulting the welfare and economy of the State. “Horticulture is the major activity in the State”, Omar said maintaining that in its flourishing lies the thriving of the economy of lakhs of people directly and indirectly associated with this industry. The Chief Minister was speaking on the occasion, Minister for Horticulture, Sham Lal Sharma presented him The Best Agriculture Leadership Award in Horticulture and the citation awarded to the Jammu and Kashmir Government at the National level for its visionary policy initiatives in transforming the horticulture sector, here at a meeting. Omar Abdullah underlined the importance of incorporating modern methods of post-harvest technology to help picking, packing and marketing of horticulture produce to the terminal markets for earning better returns. The Chief Minister asked the Horticulture Department to work out re-orientation of the presently implemented Drip Irrigation scheme for orchards. He said a comprehensive proposal to replace 40 percent share of farmers by 10 percent only be formulated and put to the Planning Department for consideration. Presently Centre Government provides 50 percent share, the farmer 40 percent and the State Government 10 percent of the cost of the scheme. Advisor to the Chief Minister, Mubarak Gul, Principal Secretary Agriculture Production Department, M I Khandey and Director Horticulture, Ghulam Hassan Shah were present on the occasion. Giving brief about various measures put in place in the State during last two and the half years by the Government to give considerable fillip to the horticulture activities, the Minister for Horticulture, Sham Lal Sharma said that the production and productivity of horticulture have shown remarkable increase during last couple of years. Principal Secretary Agriculture, M. I. Khandey told the meeting that the production of fruits in the State during last year has touched the record figure of 22.5 lakh tonnes against over 16 lakh tonnes couple of years back. Director Horticulture, G. H. Shah said that over 3.25 lakh hectares are under orchards in the State at present. He said about 30,000 new orchards have been developed during the last two years.
