Withdrawal of security to State BJP chief | Blame game between Govt, BJP | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sep 16:-State Government functionaries have denied BJP's allegations that withdrawal of security cover to the party chief Shamsher Singh, was a vindictive step. They said that review of the security for political leaders was a constant activity adding that during the last six months security cover to over 400 political activists had been withdrawn. The functionaries said that the security cover to over 400 activists was withdrawn following a detailed review of the security scenario in the state.” When we found that the security situation in the state had improved with he drop in the militancy related activities and violence we ordered withdrawal of security to sever al political leaders," one senior Government officer said. He said that withdrawal of security to BJP Chief was part of the exercise being carried out by the Government. However, senor BJP leader, Dr Nirmal Singh ridiculed the Government claim that Shamsher Singh did not require security cover. He said that the Government agencies were adopting pick and choose method in sanctioning or withdrawing security cover to political leaders. Nirmal Singh wanted to know whether the top BJP leaders in the state deserved to be brought under the security cover or those belonging to the NC and the Congress who had no political background. The BJP leader equally ridiculed the ruling coalition for having sanctioned not only security guards but bullet proof cars to political nincompoops. He said that it was unfortunate that scores of BJP leaders were moving without any security cover in very sensitive and militancy infested areas of Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Kishtwar and Mahore belts. Nirmal Singh alleged that withdrawing security cover to the top BJP leaders was part of the Government plan to immobilise the party leaders who had started a vigorous campaign against omissions and commissions of the NC led Government. He said "security or no security we will continue to play the role of responsible opposition party." He said if the union Home Minister, P Chidambaram, did not intervene "we will convey our deep displeasure to the Prime Minister while seeking his intervention in the matter so that besides Shamsher Singh other senior leaders were provided with the security cover.
