Empathy for over-aged KP youth
Ramesh Kumar9/16/2011 9:24:50 PM
There is no denial in it that turmoil and social unrest of valley has taken everybody into its savvy and there may hardly be any section of state in general and Kashmir in particular which may not have suffered on this account at one or the other front or may not have faced the burnt at the hands of militants. Turbulences of nineties are still giving sleepless nights to many when loot, arson, killings, molestation of sisters and daughters was only thing which used to make waves. Majority community of Kashmir preferred to stay back for reasons better know to one and all but minorities were left with no option except to flee from their homes and hearths leaving behind everything, mostly to save the chastity of their daughters and sisters and secondly to not let the education of their children suffer.

KP’s somehow managed to fulfill the dream of educating their children by putting in every effort by doing all small and petty jobs but this tireless effort will not bear the desired fruit is what most of community members were unaware of. One can still remember the early days of migration when it used to be difficult to arrange two square meals a day and still under these conditions the insistence of parents to their children to carry forward education really speaks high of the vision and value of education which the elders of this innocuous community had realized way-back, hence their first and foremost priority. I still remember the struggle I did to carry forward my education from class 12th onwards, in tents provided by govt where privacy got affected and still somehow I managed to complete graduation in 6 yrs not because I was not good at studies but because this is the minimum time within which authorities managed to complete the graduation of this particular batch. In most of the families children were forced to leave the studies simply to support their families as such started earning from very tender age by doing all small and petty jobs. Even at good no of instances parents were not aware of the status of their children as some children managed both (education and supporting their families) side by side. Rs. 500.00 was what govt used to provide in the form of relief to support a family which on average used to comprise of 5 to 8 members and this much amount I apprehend may these days even fall short to get this much number of members poisoned.

Fight to seek employment in govt sector had always been priority among Kashmiri Pandits and this kept KPs hunting after and during migration and this is what I believe most of youngsters did after landing in Jammu and other parts of country, but this hunt for job will last so long, people of my age had never realized. Successive govts both at centre at state level had actually never been sincere in redressing the grievances of KP’s as such had always been reluctant to provide some respite to educated youth of community, which otherwise they could have by way of providing some sort of sustenance in form of employment. And by the time this kind gesture of govt in the form of employment package came our way and the people of my age, time had already occulted as we were grown old enough to be considered for the job.

I don’t know whom should we blame for all this, the people who made us flee from our homes and hearths, the alien land and people who gave refuge to us, of our being educated, Parents, or my fellow community men who most of the time chose to remain criminally silent over the issue of age relaxation, especially while bargaining with govt about the employment package both at state and central level. Age relaxation otherwise I believe is one such issue which every time should have hijacked any type of negotiation with govt over the issue of employment.

The second phase of employment in the form of 3000 post is likely to be announced by govt very soon, if circles in the media are to be believed. We, a handful over aged candidates had been pressing to different govt bodies for age relaxation for past over a year but no body seems to be bothered about us and no heed is being paid to our just and genuine demand. Putting a deaf ear to people’s plight is what govt is all about, and these delaying tactics of govt has already added more miseries to the kitty of these highly qualified candidates and has only helped to move their position from bad to worse.

Minister for Revenue and Rehabilitation, Mr. Raman Bhalla during the First Phase of recruitment on his own assured the over aged applicants of KP community to file applications as they will be entertained but at end just proved a hollow claim. Various KP organizations are crying for the same but none of them seems sincere in getting needful done. The so called apex committee vis-à-vis paid agents of govt always sings to the tunes of govt., the members of it instead of pleading for community plight appear more busy in creating hurdles for community by either misleading the govt about the facts or by exaggerating things to suit the requirements of govt.

So far it is being seen whatever has come to the way of community in this regard are just hollow claims and no body even seems serious enough about it, perhaps for good reasons and the one community in general and over-aged applicants in particular being a handful can not voice it and to get it echoed from those deaf ears who perhaps are meant for this to be there is equally a herculean task.

To conclude with, my humble request goes to all KP organizations to come together least at this moment of time where the cause is purposive and fight unfeigned where we need to be honest and sincere in our endeavour least to ourselves. It is high time when the fight needs to be taken to its logical end as something concrete if not done at this point will have a great bearing on the coming generations of this particular lot of community. This is the only chance when something significant can be had from govt for over aged KP youth. It would be more appropriate if Prime Minister of India, who initiated this process and offered employment package to community be appraised of the same and be requested to look into the matter so as to provide some respite to this particular lot of KP youth by conceding our request. Time can never be rolled back, but this kind gesture of hon’ble self will definitely help us a great deal to gather some good memories from hereon.
