| Now, potato gets infected | | SKUAST scientists educate farmers on ‘late blight disease’ | | JAMMU, DEC 5 Scientists of SKUAST Jammu during their visit and stay programme have reported sporadic incidence of late blight disease on potato crop, an official press release issued here today said. The release adds that the symptoms of the disease affects on all parts of the plant viz leaves, stems and tubers, it appears first on the margin of the leaves as small brown patche which extend and kill the foliage in a few days; decaying leaves often emit an offensive odour, a white mildew (cottony growth) ring forms around the dead areas on the lower side of the leaves, in dry weather, water soaked areas turn necrotic brown, on stems, light brown elongated lesions are formed which may encircle the stem, tubers develop reddish brown, shallow to deep, dry rot lesions and frequent metallic tinge develops on the margins of the affected tissue. The release furtehr said that the farmers are advised to adopt following management practices for securing their potato crop. Ridges should be made high enough to cover all daughter tubers and reduce chances of their infection upon exposure, as soon as the weather conditions turn congenial (temperature 10 to 20 degree C, RH above 80 percent) for the disease appearance, irrigation should be stopped completely. But if essential, only light irrigation be given. Crop should be given protective spray with a contact fungicide, viz mancozeb @ 2 gms/ per liter water. The first spray should be applied before appearance of the disease. If needed it should be repeated at 8 to 10 days interval. In case the blight attack is severe and not checked by mancozeb, one or two sprays of metalaxy1 @ 2.5 gms per liter water. Metalzy1 is a systemic fungicide, which is absorbed quickly by the leaves and arrests further spread of the blight attack. If it is raining, a sticker like Triton AE or Sandovit @ 1 ml per liter water should be mixed with fungicide solution to prevent washing. When 75 percent crop foliage is killed by the disease, the haulms should be cut, removed from the field and buried deep.
