Mentally upset administrator can't hand down a good govt | CM's Plea | | Rustam JAMMU, Sept 16: Omar Abdullah is right when he urges the media and others not to interfere in his private life and allow him to lead a life of his own liking. The statement that he issued yesterday confirming that he and his wife Payal Nath have separated did suggest that he was quite upset over the "media speculations and rumours about their separation and his proposed re-marriage". "I have noted with considerable dismay and anguish the growing tide of speculation in the media about my private life, particularly the status of my marriage," Omar Abdullah, in fact, bemoaned, and added that "I am sure you will all appreciate that my private life has gone through a period of unprecedented upheaval". Omar Abdullah is not an ordinary man. Nor is he an ordinary politician. He is Chief Minister of the most important and sensitive Jammu and Kashmir State. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir enjoys a status no other Chief Minister in the country enjoys, not even the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Since he is head of the government in a state that always remain under focus nationally and internationally because of what has been happening in Jammu and Kashmir since October 1947, it is only natural that media and others would watch with vigilance developments as they unfold, including the developments in his own family. The reason: What happens in his family has a direct bearing not only on the governance but also on the society. The very fact that he has himself acknowledged that "my private life has gone through a period of unprecedented upheaval" is an indication that he was not really a happy and satisfied person. One can surely say that a Chief Minister whose family life is disturbed just cannot focus on issues of governance or on issues of state and national import. One can even say that since his family life was not as it should have been, he has failed to deliver and messed up things in the state to the extent that the same might not be salvaged. One can also say that a frustrated man can commit serious mistakes or express himself in a manner that not only damage his own reputation but also create a piquant situation for the state he rules and governs. It has really happened. During the past few months, the Chief Minister has made several controversial statements, which have only added to the woes of the nation in the state with the extremists taking full advantage of the situation which might have been created owing to the social situation he was confronted with. Take, for example, his statement on accession. Also, take, far instance, his tweet on Afzal Guru. No constitutional head would ever make such unsettling, provocative, and even statements to be dismissed as anti-national. That he made these statements constitutes a reflection on him. No one would buy his argument that he didn't allow the "unprecedented upheaval" in his family to "affect my work in any way." Chief Minister is a leader. He sets examples. He charts path people would like to follow. It's a matter of deep concern that the nation has in this sensitive part of the country a Chief Minister whose family life/personal life has been adversely impacted by what Omar Abdullah himself described as an "unprecedented upheaval". Oh God! Save the state. |
