| NDA unlikely to go for confrontation with Speaker | | | NEW DELHI, DEC 5
NDA leaders are meeting here tomorrow to discuss the latest downturn in their relations with Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee but are unlikely to go in for a confrontation with him. A senior BJP leader, whose party has taken its complaint against Chatterjee to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, said the Opposition was able to "send its message" across to the Speaker. The BJP's boycott of the business advisory committee meetings was itself a potential sign of the party's mood over the Speaker's conduct, he said. "There could be wait and watch approach. We may wait for the government's response before going in for some harsh measure," he said when asked whether the NDA could decide to move a no-trust motion against the Speaker. In the last session, the Opposition alliance boycotted the House for a day, with former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee writing a stinging letter to Chatterjee over his style of running the Lok Sabha. This time too, the main Opposition has taken exception to the Speaker not allowing it to raise its objections in the House over the arrest of party chief Rajnath Singh. Upset with the Speaker because he allowed House business to go on amid the din over the arrest of party chief Rajnath Singh in West Bengal, the Opposition BJP met the Prime Minister yesterday and conveyed their unhappiness. |
