| Advani complains to PM over Speaker's conduct | | | NEW DELHI, DEC 5 The main Opposition BJP has taken its complaint against Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh but decided not to disrupt House proceedings. Leader of Opposition L K Advani, who met Singh during an event last evening, told him that the Speaker carried on with House business amid din and did not allow the BJP to raise its objections over the arrest of its chief Rajnath Singh. "He (Advani) told the Prime Minister that the Opposition wants discussions to go on but the Speaker's behaviour is inappropriate and unacceptable and creates hurdles in the smooth running of the House instead," senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra told reporters today after a meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Party. Leaders of the NDA are meeting tomorrow to decide their next move over the Speaker's conduct. The BJP, however, has no immediate plans to disrupt proceedings in protest against Chatterjee. "As requested by the Prime Minister, the BJP will allow the House to function. But NDA leaders will meet tomorrow to discuss next moves over the Speaker's behaviour," Malhotra said. Advani also spoke to External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee over phone over the party's row with the Speaker. The party, he added, has sought discussion over land acquisition in Left-ruled West Bengal for a motor project. BJP chief Rajnath Singh, whose arrest in Singur triggered an uproar in Parliament yesterday, told PTI that he would visit West Bengal again. "We are opposed to acquisition of farm land. Farmers' rights have to be protected," he said. The BJP, which has set up a committee to draw up its policy on special economic zones (SEZs), is expecting its report in a day or two. Also, Malhotra said Advani praised the BJP's performance in the current session during the meeting as he flayed the government for what he called its silence on the Chinese ambassador's recent comments on his country's claims over Arunachal Pradesh. Advani maintained that the government's response to the conviction of JMM leader Shibu Soren as Union Minister had also been inadequate. Malhotra, who demanded immediate moves be carried out to identify and deport Bangladeshi aliens, also welcomed the Supreme Court ruling that quashed as unconstitutional a Central notification putting the onus on complainants to prove suspected illegal immigrants as foreigners. "The Supreme Court ruling has vindicated our stand, especially on illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. It is a slap on the face of the government that tried to encourage Bangladeshi infiltration through the backdoor. Steps should be immediately taken to identify and deport such people," the BJP leader said. |
