Software Freedom Day organized at SMVDU by OSUM CLUB | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT KATRA, Sep 17: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) today celebrated the event of ‘Software Freedom Day’ (SFD) in its university campus. The event was organized by OSUM (Open Source University Meet-Up) club of SMVDU. The event was sponsored by Agmatel India Private Limited and Amtrak Technologies. Software Freedom Day is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University is the only academic institution in J&K to celebrate SFD every year. The event started with its formal inauguration by Prof. M L Garg [Dean, College of Engineering]. Convener of the SFD Anuj Mahajan addressed the students about the occasion and its importance, motivating the students to use FOSS more and to be a part of the global FOSS community. The event was then continued by the guest speaker Manmeet Singh [Assistant Professor, BGSB University] who en-lightened the masses by sharing his valuable experiences and expertise on FOSS and ‘Open Source Licensing’. After that Prof M L Garg addressed the students promoting the spirit of event and open source. Then started the course of contests and events, starting with presentations in which there were more that fifteen participants, students presented their views of different open source technologies. The enthusiasm of the event was reflected from the fact that over 200 online registrations were made at the website for SFD according to the student event coordinators. Other than presentation events like quiz contest, programming contest and creative acts were organized. Small workshops were arranged all around the venue to teach the students practically using open source technologies.
