| Disconnect between Cong and people of Jammu | | Betraying The Cause | | Neha
Jammu, Sept 17: Policies of the NC-Congress coalition government have created widespread disappointment and dissatisfaction among all in Jammu province, except in a limited circle close to the corridors of power and the so-called representatives of this province which has been at the receiving end since 1947. The NC, which has little or no stakes in Jammu, continues to humiliate and taunt the people of this province and its main concern is for a particular section of Kashmiri society. The political behaviour of the PDP has been identical, as it has its support-base limited to the Kashmir Valley. It, like the NC, also caters to the needs and urges of a particular religious sect. As for the CPI and the CPI-M, less said the better. These outfits, like the NC and the PDP, are out-and-out Kashmir-centric. The fact of the matter is that it is extremely difficult to point out if there is any fundamental difference between these four parties. They were essentially anti-Jammu in the past and they continue to cause an affront to the self-respect of the people of Jammu province even today.
The BJP and the Panthers Party claim that they represent the Jammu sentiment, but they do little on the ground to come up to the expectations of the people. Leaders of these parties only make feeble noises on certain occasions and then go into hibernation. There is nothing whatever that could even remotely suggest that the BJP and the Panthers Party have ever taken up the Jammu cause in right earnest and that's the reason the badly let down people of Jammu have virtually lost their confidence in these two parties. In other words, they are as much angry with the NC, the PDP, the CPI and the CPI-M as they are with the BJP and the Panthers Party.
However, it is the Congress that is being condemned roundly in Jammu province. There is consensus that it is basically the Congress that is the mother of all ills afflicting the people of this province. The grievance of the people against the Congress party is that it has always bartered away or compromised the interests and rights of the people of Jammu province to keep Kashmir in good humour. Their accusation is well-founded and just cannot be brushed aside.
For example, ever since 1947, the Congress party has been pampering the Kashmiri leadership and doing all that it could to meet the legitimate and illegitimate aspirations of the people of Kashmir. The Congress has never ever shown any concern for the people of Jammu province. The situation today has worsened to the extent that the people of Jammu province have dismissed the Congress party as a Kashmir-centric party. The extent of their anger against the Congress leadership can be gauged from the fact that an overwhelming majority of people here in this province do not want to see even the faces of the Congress ministers and Congress leaders.
What has additionally added to their anger is the manner in which the Congress leadership and the Congress ministers belonging to Jammu province have been shamelessly dancing to the tune of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and permitting him not only to up his ante against India and Indian Constitution but also to devise and implement policies calculated to further jeopardise even the general civil, political and economic rights and interests. And, there is no doubt whatever that the present dispensation has done everything under the sun to accord a preferential treatment to Kashmir and further marginalise the already rather neglected and marginalised people of this unfortunate province.
Disconnect between the people of Jammu province and the Jammu-based Congress leadership and ministers in the Omar Abdullah-led essentially anti-Jammu government has created an awkward situation for the latter. There are potent reasons to feel and believe that the Congress party would be wiped out in case its leadership fails to remove this trust deficit. The Congress party would do well to share the views and sufferings of the people of this province and mitigate their hardships. It can do so provided it is willing to muster courage and take on the Chief Minister who appears determined to spoil the Jammu's political pitch for the Congress party. Right now the overwhelming majority in Jammu province believes that the Congress party is willfully betraying the Jammu cause. |
