Sham calls for creating awareness against female foeticide

JAMMU, Sep 18 Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture, Sham Lal Sharma has exhorted upon the NGOs and health functionaries to strive hard to curb the menace of female foeticide by way of creating awareness among the masses and to sensitize them about its ill effects on the society.
Minister was addressing a gathering of prominent citizens, members of Advisory Committee on PNDT, NGOs, senior officers from Health and Family Welfare and senior consultants of GMC at a one day workshop on the provisions and scope of Pre-conception and Pre-natal sex determination Techniques (PC & PNDT) Act at Institute of Engineers here today.
The workshop dwelt in length on declining sex ratio and measures thereof to capture the trend in light of PC and PNDT Act, social aspects of PNDT and other related issues in implementing the act in letter and spirit.


Sharma said that recent census report showing substantial decrease in the male-female sex ratio is an eye opener and time has come to strictly implement the PNDT Act. He asked the people, particularly women to extend their cooperation in this regard.
He said that the decreasing sex ration in the country is also alarming and those who encourage female foeticide be treated as murderers and brought to the book.
Highlighting the measures taken to prevent the menace of female foeticide, he said that a cash award of Rs. 25,000 would be provided to the person who inform the authorities about the sex determination case. He said the government has also decided to involve the workers involved with NRHM mission and those who would be found best in performance would get Rs.25,000 as a token of appreciation.
On the occasion, Sharma thanked the president SAVE (Social and Voluntary Service Empowerment) and NGO from, Banglore, Basant Kumar and Anil Kumar for discussing the PNDT model of Karnataka on the occasion.
