Stop female foeticide, Sham urges medicos | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, September 18: Health Minister Sham Lal Sharma emphasized that the medical fraternity should take the lead in banishing the bane of female foeticide from the society. He said it was imperative that this crime against humanity and god be stopped henceforth. He was addressing a one-day conference on PC & PNDT Act organized by the State Health Society (National Rural Health Mission), J&K, at Institute of Engineers. Chief Medical Officers (CMOs), Medical Superintendents, Deputy CMOs, Block Medical Officers (BMOs), gynecologists, radiologists, besides a host of other senior doctors, of all the 10 districts of the Jammu region attended. In his presentation at the beginning of the conference, NRHM Mission Director Dr Yashpal Sharma discussed in detail the various aspects of the Act and its implementation. He emphasized that awareness being an important aspect of implementation of any law, the NRHM is taking steps to educate the masses and medical fraternity about the Act. He sought the help of the specialists from different fields, including non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and media to do the needful. He said it was very important that the mindset pertaining to the female child is changed, for good. Director of Health Services Dr Madhu Khullar, in her intervention, urged the medical fraternity to take the lead in eradicating the menace of female foeticide from the society. The participants agreed that the sharp decline in the sex ratio in J&K is a serious cause of concern which needs to be addressed urgently. The Minister expressed his concern over the declining sex ratio and informed the panelists that the government was determined to end the pernicious practice of sex selection and selective killing of the female foetus. He stressed upon all the panelists to work on multi dimensional basis. He assured the gathering that the government would ensure that those violating the Act are punished. He stressed that the violators of the Act would not be spared. The vote of thanks was read by Dr Robinder Khajuria, Assistant Director, Rehbar-e-Sehat and Principal of Regional Institute of Health and Family Welfare.
