Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 19: Nationally known Diabetologist, professor and author Jitendra Singh formally inaugurated here this morning a day-long diabetes awareness programme organised by 'Amar Balidan Trust' in the presence of Trust members Amar Nath Vaishnavi, Hira Lal Chatta, Panun Kashmir president Ashwani Charungoo, Virendra Raina and Ratan Lal Raina..

While complimenting the organisers for this initiative, Jitendra Singh recalled the famous quote from Joslin, the father of modern Diabetology who had said that a diabetic who knows the most lives the longest. Emphasizing that diabetes education is the cornerstone of any successful diabetes control or prevention programme, Jitendra Singh said that there is a virtual epidemic of Diabetes sweeping the globe and while the government agencies and health ministry have failed to do enough, it is primarily the NGOs like .Amar Balidan Trust which deserve credit for their constant endeavor in this direction.

Even in Jammu and its surrounding regions, the overall prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes is over 15%, said Jitendra Singh and added that the Kashmiri Pandit community has been the worst sufferer because after its displacement from the Valley, the community went through tremendous mental and physical stress leading to a sudden upsurge in Diabetes.

Referring to his recent and fifth book on Diabetes published by Elsvier publishers, Jitendra Singh said that the greatest challenge for India during the next one decade would be Diabetes in young and Diabetes in pregnancy. If these two sections of society can be saved from diabetes, this will be a great breakthrough in preventing diabetes in the future generations.

Jitendra Singh highlighted the value of traditional Indian lifestyle and eating habits which worked as a natural safeguard against Diabetes.

Free investigation tests and free medicines were distributed at the camp. Jitendra Singh was assisted by a team of doctors including Sushil Khotru.
