Kashmiri Hindu Temples And Shrines Management Bill ,Seeking support from Muslim Community
Dr Rajiv Bhat9/20/2011 10:48:59 AM
Recently kashmiri Pandit representatives met members of the Legislative Assembly seeking their support for passage of Kashmiri Hindu Temples and shrines management Bill . All such members whom these Pandits could make contact with, based on past relations, were Kashmiri Muslims. These members were obviously surprised as to why were the Pandits seeking their help in a matter totally religious and therefore their personal. I as one of the members of the Pandit representative bodies did try to explain to them these reasons as detailed hereunder.

Kashmiri as an ethnic race have all along been a populace of super sensitive , rationally thinking kind and have accepted change only after convincing their own selves about the superior quality of the change. There have been instances of forced change as well but only at the behest of external forces and winds that have blown from across the mountains. This is true of our religious beliefs as well. There were times when we were all sanatanis. The wind of lord Budhas thoughts blew from across the mountains and we not only accepted but our thinking brains made us Dharam Gurus of Budh Mat able enough to carry the message across to Tibet. Sankaracharya brought a fresh message into the valley and we accepted and took the Shavait thoughts to new heights of Trik Shastra and Shakhti Mahima. Then came Islam and again we accepted it and Kashmiris became the Reshis revered throughout not only when they were alive but even after they had departed. This acceptance of the Rishi cult by the society as a whole has been unique to Kashmir. And at the same time these religious guides never looked down upon the minority thought processes existing alongside the Islamic thoughts. This acceptance is not only reflected in the religious tolerance but cultural interactions as well. The populace became one, irrespective of their religious beliefs, as soon as they would step into the premises of a shrine whether that be of Muslim Reshi or a Hindhu Saint. Our own Nund Reshi and his disciples or Lal Ded have entered and remained /enshrined in our thought process and thereby our actions have always remained tolerant and accommodating. In my village Battas were equal, if not more, partners in celebrating the festival of our local Ziarat that of Hyder Sheikh Sahib . I still remember the day in early sixties when a local Muslim had planted willow saplings on the land of the Hindu temple causing panic among those Battas for weeks but when the matter became known to the Muslim populace they not only ensured removal of the saplings but helped Battas in raising a permanent wall. My Mother even now while in forced migration does not forget to send her kahnev contribution to the Dastgeer Shrine in Srinagar .Me and my wife visited Ziarat Baba Reshi during the intensified agitational days of 2008.I still smell the fragrance of those happy and cheerful expressions of the Khadims as well as devotees in welcoming us into the Ziarat and the kitchen of the saint. We have never heard of any Muslim showing any disrespect to Mata Kheer Bhawani at Tulamulla even though they come there in thousands. The sofiana poetry be it that of Shamas Faqir or Nyama Sahib and may others is welcome in both Pandit as well as Muslim get together, thus making Kashmiri different unique race in itself.

The response given by the two communities to the foreign originated windstorm that blew in 1989 was different to one another. While the Muslims partly welcomed it and partly accepted it unwillingly become sufferers of this monolith. The Hindus could neither welcome it nor accept it therefore they were made to run away from this situation. Many among both the communities have taken advantage of the situation. Lessons of past tolerance and mutual respect have been forgotten and a new chapter of distrust and animosity is being taught by the neoleaders in both the communities .The youngsters are taught only hate propaganda to ensure distancing the two from each other. In this complex scenario a new breed of neoriches have stepped in who are on the lookout for grabbing the coffins of the dead as well. These Moffassids after having grabbed and force purchased the properties individually owned by KPs have their eyes set on the 'Batta' community properties now, whether in the shape of temple Lands and or the commercial buildings thereon. These Moffassids, the neoriches are being helped in this by people of similar character among the pandit community, no doubt about it. Had the case not been so, the Lands of Baba Dharam Dass temple in Srinagar would not have been purchased from Babas who do not own it. The Lands of temple at Goni Khan would not have been encroached upon by a mafia of land grabbers. The lands of Shri Sharika Devi at Hariparbat would not have been encroached and leveled. The Smadhi of Sed Bub at Sadhu Malyun Kandi Khaas Kupwara would not have been renovated at Government expenses and named Ziarat Syed Kamal Din Sahib. Government too is not falling back in this encroachment drive. It took no time in constructing a Tourist reception Complex in the premises of temple existing in the Gulmarg Bazar as if there was no land available in the whole of Gulmarg to raise the TRC.Government also took no time in taking over lands belonging to Ahle- Hanood whether at Sangam kokernag or Shopian or Devsar Anantnag or at Sopore Town. The Govt. officials like the private land grabbers were in such hurry to take up these projects that they never felt it to be essentially required that the concerned be taken into confidence or at least informed of the developments.

This needs to be placed on record that these activities are being carried out by a very few, call them muffassid, the land grabbers, Moka- Parasat or whatever name you may give them. But the intention behind writing these lines is to address majority who are not a party to this un Islamic and anti Kashmiri ethos activity. The silence and helplessness of my Muslim neighbour in 1990 while I was leaving my home completely clueless and harassed is understandable. Again his silence when my home was looted and set on fire using gun Powder is also understandable. But the silence now when I am being forced to make distress sale of the land where my home stood is not understood. I am bewildered at this attitude of my neighbour. He is proving himself a failure as a good Muslim, a good Kashmiri and a good human being. Beginning from Bulbul Sahib, no saint no Reshi ever taught what is being practiced now.

And therefore, these are the reasons for which I alongwith al my Kashmiri Pandit brethren call upon our esteemed members of the state legislature to help this down trodden community in getting this Bill passed so that the age old fraternity exhibited by Qudoos Gojwari towards Birbal Dhar is once again exhibited and the harmonious days of self perseverance and mutual tolerance lived during the days of Budshah are restored. This responsibility lies squarely on the shoulders of the majority community who by virtue of being in the majority have to play the role of the elder brother in the society. Let us not forget what Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) had said:”The world suffers a lot. Not because of the violence of bad people, but because of the silence of the good people”.
